Tahun lalu, seorang avonturir sekaligus penulis Australia bernama Peter Gamgee dan tim pemandu lokal mendaki lereng Gunung Obree yang curam, licin, dan berlumut di Papua Nugini (PNG). Berjalan dalam sepatu bot yang basah kuyup, mereka teguh membuka jalan setapak dengan parang dan menembus kabut tebal dalam hutan. Penemuan kembali bangkai pesawat Flying Dutchman dari era Perang Dunia II oleh mereka di Pegunungan Owen Stanley, PNG, telah membuka kembali sebuah babak sejarah perang yang terlupakan \u2014 dan bisa memicu kegiatan trekking berkelanjutan di wilayah tersebut. Tujuan mereka bukan hanya tentang ingatan, melainkan juga soal penemuan: untuk menemukan pesawat yang telah lama hilang, yang lenyap di gunung itu pada 10 November 1942.<\/p>\n

Itu bukanlah upaya pertama Gamgee. Pada 2020, sang avonturir telah menjelajahi wilayah tersebut, tetapi tidak berhasil menemukan bangkai pesawat itu karena mengikuti rumor-rumor berumur puluhan tahun yang telah bergeser detailnya seiring cerita-cerita yang diturunkan dari satu generasi ke generasi berikutnya. Saat pesawat melintasi Pegunungan Owen Stanley yang terjal dan bergerigi, hujan badai melanda, menarik pesawat itu ke bawah.<\/p>\n

“Kami sudah terbang hampir setengah jam ketika tiba-tiba pesawat itu terjebak dalam pusaran arus ke bawah dan jatuh,” kenang Sersan Senior Edward Holleman, seorang penumpang dan korban selamat. “Kami menabrak tajuk-tajuk pohon. Sesaat kemudian, kami jatuh. Saya ingat terpelanting dari tempat duduk saya, api berkobar hebat, amunisi bertebaran di mana-mana.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Tujuh belas dari 23 orang di dalam pesawat selamat dari kecelakaan itu, tetapi delapan orang di antaranya mengalami luka parah. Selama beberapa hari berikutnya, dua kelompok berangkat untuk mencari bantuan, meninggalkan yang terluka. Tak satu pun yang kembali. Sebuah catatan di pintu<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Hari-hari terakhir mereka terabadikan dalam sebuah peninggalan yang gamblang dan intim: pintu toilet pesawat. Di pintu itu, mereka menuliskan catatan setiap hari, entri-entri singkat, sejak kecelakaan\u2014ada yang pragmatis (“Menemukan sebatang cokelat”), ada pula yang bernada humor gelap (“Kehabisan makanan khayalan. Mereka seharusnya tak lama lagi”) dan ada pula yang memilukan (“Johnnie meninggal hari ini”). Ditemukan kembali pada 1961 dalam pencarian udara yang tidak bermaksud untuk mencarinya, pintu tersebut dipugar dan dipajang di Museum Perang Port Moresby sebelum dipinjamkan secara permanen ke Museum Nasional Angkatan Udara Amerika Serikat di Ohio.<\/p>\n

Mengubah sejarah menjadi jalan keluar<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Oktober ini, Gamgee akan memimpin Trekking Perdana Flying Dutchman. Ekspedisi ini bertujuan untuk melakukan lebih dari sekadar mengikuti jejak tragedi tersebut.<\/p>\n
