Selama berabad-abad, orang-orang telah menangkap dan membunuh kupu-kupu untuk dikoleksi: mereka mungkin merupakan &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/nautil.us\/the-hidden-butterfly-trade-510827\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">hewan yang paling banyak diperdagangkan di planet ini<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Satu spesies primadona bagi banyak kolektor adalah Queen Alexandra Birdwing Butterfly (QABB), atau <em>Ornithoptera alexandra<\/em>\u2014kupu-kupu terbesar di dunia yang diketahui hidup saat ini. Memperdagangkannya adalah tindakan ilegal, tetapi spesimen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbpol.com\/nbpol-stories\/the-qabb-breeding-project.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">tunggalnya<\/a> masih menghasilkan hingga 10.000 dolar AS (sekitar Rp163 juta) bagi pemburu liar di pasar gelap. Kupu-kupu ini relatif mudah diselundupkan karena tidak terdeteksi oleh pemindai sinar-X di pelabuhan internasional. Betina dari spesies ini, yang berwarna cokelat dengan corak kuning, dapat membentang hampir 30 sentimeter dari ujung sayap satu ke ujung sayap lainnya. Ukuran yang jantan lebih kecil tetapi coraknya lebih dramatis, sayap hitam matte mereka berhiaskan corak warna hijau, kuning, dan biru yang berkilauan.<\/p>\n<p>Sudah dikenal oleh suku-suku asli Papua Nugini (PNG) selama puluhan ribu tahun, QABB baru \u2018ditemukan\u2019 oleh sains Barat pada 1906. Saat itu, naturalis asal London Albert Stewart Meek, yang sedang dalam misi untuk menangkap spesies baru, melihat seekor kupu-kupu besar dan tidak dikenal terbang tinggi di tajuk hutan, di suatu tempat di Dataran Popondetta di Provinsi Oro saat ini\u2014ia mengangkat senjatanya dan menembaknya.<\/p>\n<p>Saat ini, Provinsi Oro dengan bangga menggambarkan siluet QABB pada bendera provinsinya, dan di kios-kios pasar di ibu kota provinsi Popondetta, Anda dapat membeli kaus oblong bergambar serangga tersebut. Namun, untuk melihat kupu-kupu secara langsung, Anda harus berkendara jauh ke luar kota, melewati tumpukan sampah yang terbakar dan pagar kawat berduri serta deretan kelapa sawit yang kini menggantikan habitat alami makhluk ini.<\/p>\n<p>Jangkauan habitat QABB yang diketahui saat ini hanya 140 kilometer persegi, hampir seluruhnya di hutan hujan asli. Ia bergantung secara khusus pada beberapa spesies tanaman merambat <em>Aristolochia<\/em> yang tumbuh di semak belukar, yang merupakan satu-satunya sumber makanan bagi ulatnya dan satu-satunya tempat ia bertelur.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Itu makanan mereka, dan juga rumah mereka,&#8221; kata Elton Nukara, yang tinggal di Desa Dareki di Dataran Tinggi Managalas di provinsi tersebut. Proyek ini bertujuan untuk membantu spesies kupu-kupu itu berkembang biak dengan menangkap dan memelihara ulat dan kepompongnya di sebuah rumah perlindungan yang dilingkupi jaring hijau, yang aman dari burung dan laba-laba, hingga menetas menjadi kupu-kupu dan dapat dilepasliarkan ke hutan.<\/p>\n<p>Meskipun proyek ini bermaksud baik, belum ada penelitian yang cukup mengenai siklus hidup spesies tersebut untuk mengetahui apakah ini benar-benar strategi konservasi yang efektif. Selain itu, menetaskan kupu-kupu di dalam kurungan dapat membuat mereka menjadi sasaran empuk bagi pemburu liar: penyelundupan spesies tersebut masih terjadi, dan Managalas tetap menjadi sumber yang paling mungkin.
