Lembah dan puncaknya melukiskan ragam bentang alam dan ekosistem. Terdapat lima tipe besar hutan, yang menjadi rumah bagi sejumlah besar spesies terancam dan\/atau endemik \u2013 antara lain monyet daun muka ungu [<i>Semnopithecus vetulus<\/i>], tupai uban raksasa [<i>Ratufa macroura<\/i>], dan  Loris ramping merah [<i>Loris tardigradus<\/i>].<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Sebagaimana beragam makhluk unik ini, masyarakat Sri Lanka juga bergantung pada bentang alamnya &#8212;  meskipun secara agak tidak langsung. Pegunungan Knuckles menjadi daerah aliran sungai (DAS) penting dalam mengaliri pesawahan, dan menyokong keamanan pangan. Selain juga menjadi sumber listrik yang murah dan berkelanjutan dari sejumlah pembangkit listrik tenaga air.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Sayangnya, sumber air penting ini tidak mengalir secara tetap sebagaimana biasanya. Lebih tingginya curah hujan akibat perubahan iklim, diiringi praktik pertanian tak berkelanjutan menggerus kesuburan tanah dan mendegradasi strukturnya. Erosi yang ditimbulkan mengarah pada pendangkalan reservoar di hulu sehingga mengurangi kapasitas penyimpanan. Sementara, naiknya suhu dan kekeringan yang makin sering terjadi di lahan rata mempertinggi kebutuhan irigasi.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Sebuah inisiatif adaptasi berbasis ekosistem (EbA) dari Kementerian Irigasi Srilangka dan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cifor-icraf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Pusat Penelitian Kehutanan Internasional  dan World Agroforestry<\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>(CIFOR-ICRAF), didukung oleh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenclimate.fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Green Climate Fund<\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>(GCF), berupaya mengatasi dampak ini dengan melakukan pendekatan holistik atas manajemen lahan dan air, melindungi DAS hilir sekaligus mendorong praktik resilien iklim. Inisiatif ini dibahas dalam satu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cifor-icraf.org\/event\/cifor-icraf-at-unfccc-cop28\/64050\/connecting-land-and-water-ecosystem-based-adaptation-through-agroecology-in-sri-lanka\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">sesi<\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>pada konferensi tahunan perubahan iklim PBB (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cop28.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">COP28<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Salah satu fitur kunci proyek ini adalah pengembangan mekanisme pembayaran jasa lingkungan (PES) dalam menyediakan pendanaan berkelanjutan bagi intensifikasi agroekologis \u2013 misalnya dengan mendorong dewan kelistrikan mendanai praktik konservasi tanah dan air oleh petani di hulu yang bertujuan menjaga aliran sungai lebih reliabel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cDengan lebih banyak melakukan konservasi tanah dan air di DAS hulu berarti bahwa sedimentasi akan berkurang. Hal ini berarti kita tidak perlu terlalu sering mengeruk reservoar, dan dengan menghindari pengerukan berarti kita lebih memiliki ketersediaan listrik untuk digunakan,\u201d papar Prasanthi Gunawardene, Guru Besar Ekonomi Lingkungan Departemen Ilmu Kehutanan dan Lingkungan Hidup di Universitas Sri Jayewardenepura.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cOleh karena itu, kita memiliki kaitan ekonomi kuat antara petani dan dewan kelistrikan, karena dewan dapat memberi pembayaran pada pemilik lahan dalam menerapkan konservasi tanah dan air, hingga mempertinggi produksi air,\u201d kata Gunawardene.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Beria Leimona, Pakar Senior Tata Kelola Bentang Alam dan Investasi CIFOR-ICRAF menambahkan, proyek ini juga dapat diterapkan pada biodiversitas dan pendanaan karbon lebih luas. Ia mencatat urgensi pendekatan riset-aksi partisipatoris dan \u201cmenjamin keadilan akses dalam mencegah eksklusi pihak termarjinalkan \u2013 termasuk petani kecil, yang dimaksudkan menjadi penerima manfaat utama inisiatif ini.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Leel Randeni, Direktur Perubahan Iklim Kementerian Lingkungan Hidup Sri Lanka, menyampaikan pandangannya mengenai prioritas negara pada adaptasi perubahan iklim, dan berbagi cara bagaimana proyek ini bisa sejalan dengan hal tersebut. Fergus Sinclair, Pimpinan Ilmuwan di CIFOR-ICRAF dan Ko-Penyelenggara <a href=\"https:\/\/glfx.globallandscapesforum.org\/topics\/21467\/page\/TPP-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Platform Kemitraan Transformatif Agroecology<\/a>(Agroecology TPP), kemudian memberikan presentasi detail mengenai proyek ini. Ia juga mengeksplorasi bagaimana praktik agroekologi secara positif berkontribusi dan mempengaruhi keamanan pangan dan nutrisi.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Upaya ini menegaskan relevansi inisiatif terkini yang dipimpin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwmi.cgiar.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">International Water Management Institute<\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>(IWMI)-led, dan didukung oleh Agroecology TPP. Inisiatif ini mencoba membenahi kelangkaan riset agroekologis yang terfokus pada manajemen air dan pangan akuatik, dengan mengintegrasikan kedua hal tersebut secara lebih prominen dalam <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/ca5602en\/ca5602en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">13 Prinsip Agroekologi<\/a>, yang telah disusun oleh konsorsium pimpinan FAO pada 2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cKami mendapati bahwa mengabaikan air dan pangan akuatik dalam riset agroekologi berhubungan dengan kealpaan dalam penyusunan strategi, perencanaan, dan pengambilan keputusan \u2013 dan karenanya kita kehilangan aspek kunci sistem agripangan yang sangat penting,\u201d kata Matthew McCartney, Ketua Kelompok Riset Insfrastruktur Air dan Ekosistem Berkelanjutan di IWMI, saat sesi berlangsung.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Pendekatan lebih holistik dan terintegrasi yang disarankan dalam kajian tersebut perlu memikirkan faktor-faktor di luar pertanian \u2013 memandang bentang alam dan menimbang dampak sistem pertanian kita pada lingkungan akuatik hilir dan perairan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dinamai karena rupa geografinya mirip kepal tinju, Pegunungan Knuckles Sri Lanka selalu berselimut salju dan pepohonan.
