Dipangkas dari tutupan hutan aslinya, dikeringkan dan sering terkontaminasi, diasamkan dan\/atau terganggu oleh salinifikasi, lahan terdegradasi sering tetap kosong selama beberapa dekade, sehingga melepaskan karbon dioksida tingkat tinggi ke atmosfer untuk sementara.<\/p>\n<p>Hal ini membuat Ilmuwan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cifor.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Pusat Penelitian Kehutanan Internasional dan World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF)<\/a>, Himlal Baral dan rekan-rekannya sangat senang ketika melihat spesies pohon asli <em>Pongamia pinnata<\/em> dapat tumbuh subur hanya dalam waktu 1,5 tahun setelah ditanam di petak percobaan di lahan gambut terdegradasi di Kalimantan Tengah, Indonesia. Saat air pasang, air laut memasuki rumah warga, merendam lantai dan perabotan rumah. Ketika gelombang badai dan hujan lebat datang, banjir makin parah, rumah-rumah dan jalan pun terendam. Jalanan aspal desa kini sudah tidak bisa dilewati karena terendam air.<\/p>\n<p>Tim peneliti multidisiplin dari <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cifor.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Center for International Forestry Research \u2013 World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF)<\/a>, Universitas Diponegoro dan Yayasan Hutan Biru berharap dapat membantu Demak mengatasi krisis ini melalui proyek <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cifor.org\/knowledge\/publication\/8348\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><em>Restoring Coastal Landscape for Adaptation Integrated Mitigation <\/em>(ReCLAIM)<\/a> yang berfokus pada restorasi mangrove berbasis bukti <em>(evidence-based) <\/em>untuk meningkatkan mata pencaharian, ketahanan pangan dan manfaat gizi bagi penduduk di area pesisir.
