Walaupun beliau bisa membayangkan bagaimana bekerja di bidang kehutanan, ia tidak pernah menyangka akan mendedikasikan 30 tahun hidupnya untuk melakukan riset ilmiah dalam bidang ekosistem, lahan gambut, mangrove, dan perubahan iklim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaat itu, saya hanya berpikir pohon-pohon besar hanya bisa digunakan untuk tujuan komersil,\u201d ujar Murdiyarso, mengakui bahwa saat kecil, ia tidak memiliki kesadaran akan isu lingkungan.<\/p>\n<p>Maju ke 2022, Murdiyarso menjadi ilmuwan Indonesia pertama yang menerima yang dianugerahi gelar doktor kehormatan oleh Fakultas Agrikultur dan Kehutanan Universitas Helsinki, Finlandia, sebuah penghargaan untuk kontribusi besar beliau dalam riset kehutanan pada 17 Juni.<\/p>\n<div class=\"short-image short-image--left\">\n<div class=\"fancybox-image GTMshortImage\">\n<div class=\"short-image__thumb\" style=\"height: 280px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 280px;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forestsnews.cifor.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Daniel-Murdiyarso-honorary.png\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"short-image__type\">\n<h3><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"short-image__title\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Saat ini, beliau menjabat sebagai ilmuwan utama <em>(Principal Scientist) <\/em>di Pusat Penelitian Kehutanan Internasional (CIFOR) \u2013 Pusat Wanatani Dunia (CIFOR-ICRAF), tempat di mana beliau telah bekerja sejak 2003 \u2013 dan juga professor di Departemen Geofisika dan Meteorologi di Institut Pertanian Bogor (FMIPA \u2013 IPB) di Indonesia, tempat beliau mengajar sejak 1997.<\/p>\n<p>Perjalanan karir beliau penuh petualangan. Banyak dari <em>fieldwork <\/em>yang beliau jalankan dilakukan dalam kondisi yang memiliki risiko tinggi, menerjang air dan lumpur setinggi leher di lahan gambut, dan mengunjungi hutan mangrove di Indonesia di mana gajah, harimau, buaya, dan ular menjadi tuan rumah, untuk mengumpulkan data dan menghitung cadangan ekosistem karbon biru.<\/p>\n<p>Masih jelas dalam ingatan Murdiyarso, hari-hari saat dia masih menjadi ilmuwan iklim pertama di CIFOR-ICRAF. \u201cSaat ini, perubahan iklim telah menjadi prioritas global. Tetapi ketika saya baru saja memulai di CIFOR-ICRAF, kami harus mendorong isu perubahan iklim untuk bisa menjadi bagian dari agenda, dan juga menghubungkan kehutanan dengan perubahan iklim.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dalam perjalanan karirnya, Murdiyarso telah memberikan kontribusi yang signifikan untuk perkembangan penelitian perubahan iklim di Indonesia dan juga internasional. Dalam dua dekade terakhir, beliau telah menerbitkan lebih dari 100 riset yang berkaitan dengan perubahan penggunaan lahan dan siklus biogeokimia, juga mengenai mitigasi dan adaptasi perubahan iklim. Sepanjang karirnya, beliau juga telah menerima banyak penghargaan bergengsi, termasuk Ahmad Bakrie Award (2010), Sarwono-LIPI Award (2018), dan Habibie Prize (2020). Sejak 2002, Murdiyarso juga merupakan anggota aktif dari <em>Indonesian Academy of Sciences<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class='short-video sv_new short-video--left' >\n            <a class='short-video-trigger GTMshortVideo' href='#' data-video-url=''>\n                <div class='short-video__thumb'>\n                    <img src='' width='260' alt=''>\n                    <div class='short-video__icon'><i class='fa fa-play-circle-o'><\/i><\/div>\n                <\/div>\n                <div class='short-video__type'><\/div>\n                <div class='short-video__title'><\/div>\n            <\/a>\n        <\/div>\n<p>Ke depan, Murdiyarso berharap untuk menggunakan diplomasi iklim untuk mempererat hubungan antara Finlandia dan Indonesia melalui program akademik dan afiliasi penelitian dengan Universitas Helsinki, CIFOR-ICRAF, dan FMIPA \u2013 IPB.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUniversitas Helsinki merupakan universitas riset publik tertua dan terbesar di Finlandia, dan IPB merupakan salah satu universitas tertua di Indonesia. Kedua universitas memiliki sejarah panjang dalam Pendidikan Kehutanan dan Agrikultur,\u201d ujar beliau, \u201cBagi saya, penghargaan ini merupakan awal dari perjalanan diplomasi dan pertukaran ilmiah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Murdiyarso, khususnya percaya bahwa restorasi lahan gambut \u2013 salah satu area riset beliau \u2013 bisa menjadi katalisator. Meskipun ada perbedaan karakteristik antara properti di dataran tinggi dan lahan gambut di negara tropis, kedua negara dapat memulai dialog seputar pengelolaan lahan gambut berkelanjutan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaya mendapati bahwa Finlandia, di masa lalu, memproduksi banyak gas rumah kaca dari lahan gambut yang dikeringkan dan diekstrasi untuk menghasilkan energi,\u201d ujar beliau, \u201cNamun, sebagai tindak lanjut dari <em>Paris Agreement<\/em>, Finlandia telah membagikan strategi jangka yang menjabarkan skenario dan peninjauan dampak yang berkaitan dengan target untuk melakukan netralitas karbon pada 2035, perkembangan emisi dan serapan pembuangan gas rumah kaca pada 2050.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Kebijakan publik bukan lah suatu yang asing untuk Murdiyarso yang pernah menjabat sebagai Wakil Menteri Lingkungan selama dua tahun pada 2020. Sebagai Penulis Utama dari Laporan Penilaian Ketiga IPCC dan Laporan Khusus IPCC mengenai Tata Guna Lahan, Perubahan Tata Guna Lahan dan Kehutanan, ia memahami betul peran ilmuwan dalam mengembangkan kebijakan publik.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSebagai seorang ilmuwan di era modern, kita tidak hanya harus menghasilkan angka-angka atau ilmu pengetahuan, tetapi kita juga harus dapat menyampaikan gagasan,\u201d kata beliau, \u201cUntuk melakukan hal ini, ilmuwan harus dapat membangun jembatan, hubungan yang baik dengan <em>stakeholder <\/em>di sektor pemerintahan dan juga swasta.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class='short-video sv_new short-video--left' >\n            <a class='short-video-trigger GTMshortVideo' href='#' data-video-url=''>\n                <div class='short-video__thumb'>\n                    <img src='' width='260' alt=''>\n                    <div class='short-video__icon'><i class='fa fa-play-circle-o'><\/i><\/div>\n                <\/div>\n                <div class='short-video__type'><\/div>\n                <div class='short-video__title'><\/div>\n            <\/a>\n        <\/div>\n<p>Sebagai contoh: Murdiyarso memanfaatkan pengalaman beliau di bidang ilmiah dan juga kebijakan publik untuk menjadi salah satu arsitek pembangunan World Mangrove Center Teluk Balikpapan (WMCTB) di Kalimantan Timur.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia adalah rumah bagi seperempat hutan mangrove dunia, membuat Indonesia mempunyai peranan penting dalam penelitian dan pengelolaan mangrove<em>, <\/em>termasuk dalam hal mitigasi dan adaptasi perubahan iklim, perlindungan biodiversitas, dan pelayanan ekosistem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndonesia sangat beruntung. Terlepas dari banyaknya bencana alam dan musibah lainnya, negara kita diberkati oleh banyak hal, termasuk ekosistem mangrove. Kita harus bijak dalam pengelolaan, jangan hanya memperhitungkan mangrove sebagai aset ekonomi,\u201d jelas beliau.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cSetelah pembukaan pusat mangrove tersebut, tentu semua mata memandang Indonesia,\u201d ujar Murdiyarso, \u201cHarapan saya, WMCTB dapat membantu membuka kesadaran pentingnya mangrove, dan dampaknya untuk perubahan iklim secara global.
