Namun, negara lain seperti Peru, Republik Kongo dan Republik Demokratik Kongo, baru mulai memperhatikan keberadaan stok karbon yang signifikan dalam lahan gambut di bawah permukaan. Jadi saya berbicara mengenai Basin Kongo Tengah.<\/p>\n<div class='short-image short-image--left'>\n\t\t\t\t<a class='fancybox-image GTMshortImage' href='' target='_self'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='short-image__thumb'>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img src='' width='260'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='short-image__type'><h3><\/h3><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='short-image__title'><h4><\/h4><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>Di antara dua negara itu, terdapat lembah yang disebut Cuvette Centrale. Luasnya setara Jerman dan telah diteliti oleh sebuah tim peneliti dari Inggris dan Republik Kongo. Mereka mengidentifikasi bahwa sekitar separuh wilayah itu kemungkinan berupa hutan rawa gambut. Sejak lama masyarakat sudah mengetahui keberadaan lahan gambut di wilayah ini, namun ternyata terdapat lahan gambut lebih luas dari pada dugaan kita semua, dan stok karbonnya lebih masif.<\/p>\n<p>Temuan ini memberi negara-negara itu sesuatu yang baru dan sangat penting untuk dipikirkan mengenai apa yang akan dilakukan untuk memberi kontribusi pada mitigasi perubahan iklim dan memelihara stok karbon ekosistemnya.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seberapa penting temuan ini?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kita tahu bahwa para peneliti telah meneliti topik ini, namun saya benar-benar terkejut mengetahui luasan lahan gambut, yang sekitar lima kali dari apa yang diduga sebelumnya. Jumlah karbon dalam lahan gambut itu sekitar 30 gigaton karbon, setara dengan stok karbon di seluruh biomassa hutan kedua negara tersebut, jadi terdapat sejumah besar karbon terkonsentrasi di sana.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Apa langkah berikut? Apa yang seharusnya dilakukan?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wilayah ini masih cukup terjaga, ini berita baik. Kondisinya masih bagus. Kini, terserah pada semua orang masyarakat internasional untuk mendukung kedua negara agar kondisi ini terjaga seperti apa adanya, karena bagi mereka dan kita semua, ini baru muncul dalam radar.<\/p>\n<p>Kita tahu bahwa wilayah ini penting untuk berbagai alasan lain \u2013 karena memiliki nilai keragaman hayati tinggi, ada gorila di sebagian hutannya, ada pula bonobos di wilayah itu. Banyak alasan wilayah ini penting bagi dunia hingga saat ini, namun temuan ini memberi alasan tambahan. Meski tetap dalam kondisi bagus. Namun, sudah ada beberapa konsesi hutan di sekitar ujung (konsesi untuk eksplorasi minyak dan gas atau pertambangan), jadi rasanya kita berada di titik balik untuk wilayah ini. Dan ini saat yang tepat bagi temuan ini untuk menguatkan urgensi ini. Meski ini artinya ada pekerjaan penting bagaimana wilayah ini dapat dikonservasi.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Global Landscapes Forum adalah wahana agar semua orang duduk semeja, bukannya duduk di kotaknya masing-masing.
