{"id":50032,"date":"2017-06-06T11:00:22","date_gmt":"2017-06-06T04:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.forestsnews.org\/?p=50032"},"modified":"2018-02-07T14:59:46","modified_gmt":"2018-02-07T07:59:46","slug":"karbon-tersembunyi-di-kongo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.forestsnews.org\/id\/50032\/karbon-tersembunyi-di-kongo","title":{"rendered":"Karbon tersembunyi di Kongo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Di bawah hutan rawa dan pepohonan sawit Basin Kongo tersimpan kekayaan tersembunyi: lebih dari 145.000 kilometer persegi gambut kaya karbon.<\/p>\n<p>Lahan gambut Basin Kongo terbentuk selama ribuan tahun, dan diperkirakan mengandung sekitar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2017\/jan\/11\/worlds-largest-peatland-vast-carbon-storage-capacity-found-congo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">30 miliar ton karbon <\/a>\u2013 setara dengan seluruh karbon yang tersimpan di seluruh hutan Republik Kongo dan Republik Demokratik Kongo digabungkan.<\/p>\n<p>Penemuan besar ini meningkatkan estimasi global stok karbon gambut tropis hingga 36 persen, dan menempatkan Basin Kongo sebagai kompleks lahan gambut terbesar di wilayah tropis.<\/p>\n<p>Wilayah tropis telah lama terabaikan dalam kajian lahan gambut global, karena asumsi bahwa gambut umumnya terbentuk di iklim dingin. Namun, penelitian terbaru mengungkap potensi gambut tropis tiga kali lebih besasr dibanding dugaan sebelumnya. Oleh karena itu, jika di gambut boreal utara, temperatur yang terutama mengendalikan akumulasi materi organik, di wilayah tropis, air yang melakukannya.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sejalan dengan meningkatnya pemahaman kita mengenai formasi gambut tropis, kombinasi metodologi prediksi terbaru dan penelitian lapangan mengkonfirmasi keberadaan deposit masif gambut tropis, dan sekaligus membantu mengkuantifikasi wilayah, jumlah dan stok karbon-nya.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTernyata ada lebih banyak gambut di tropis dibanding dugaan kita sebelumnya dan lebih banyak stok karbon di tropis dibanding apa yang kita perkirakan,\u201d kata Roman-Cuesta.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MENGGALI DALAM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stok karbon masif Basin Kongo dan wilayah lainnya tidak diketahui hingga baru-baru ini, karena lahan gambut tropis cenderung terpencil, padat vegetasi, dan tidak terlalu dipahami. Meski telah lama para peneliti mengklaim bahwa kondisi ekologis terbentuknya gambut dimungkinkan di wilayah tropis, data lapangan belum mengkonfirmasi hal ini di banyak wilayah.<\/p>\n\n<p>Simon Lewis, profesor Universitas Leeds dan University College London di Inggris, merupakan bagian dari tim yang mengkonfirmasi eksistensi masif gambut di Basin Kongo. Ia mempresentasikan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v542\/n7639\/full\/nature21048.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">temuannya<\/a> pada acara paralel yang digelar CIFOR dan para mitranya bersamaan dengan <a href=\"http:\/\/unfccc.int\/meetings\/bonn_may_2017\/meeting\/10076.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Konferensi Perubahan Iklim UNFCCC di Jerman<\/a>, pada 8-18 Mei.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTidak ada satelit yang dapat mendeteksi gambut, hanya menunjukkan tampilan yang terkait,\u201d kata Lewis.<\/p>\n<p>Meskipun citra satelit dapat mengungkap area lahan basah, katanya, tidak terlihat gambut yang tersembunyi di bawah tutupan hutan, dan kedalamannya di tanah. Pengetahuan mengenai proses formasi gambut tropis juga masih tahap awal, hingga sulit untuk mencari lokasi, dan mengestimasi seberapa dalam gambutnya.<\/p>\n<p>Satu-satunya cara memverifikasi keberadaan dan kedalaman gambut, kata Lewis, adalah mendatangi lokasi dan menggali bukti.<\/p>\n<p>Inilah yang dilakukan timnya. Dengan bantuan dan pengetahuan pemandu lokal, para peneliti bersampan dan berjalan memasuki wilayah terpencil, terkadang perlu dua minggu berjalan kaki dari akses sungai terdekat untuk mengambil sampel tanah dan membawanya kembali ke labolatorium. Tanah subur dan hitam ditemukan mengandung 65 persen atau  lebih karbon, di kedalamaan lebih dari 30 sentimeter di bawah permukaan, memenuhi definisi gambut.<\/p>\n<p>Jadi bagaimana tim tahu lokasi pencarian?<\/p>\n<p>Pertama, mereka mengidentifikasi kondisi formasi gambut tropis. Genangan air menahun di hutan rawa dan air rendah nutrisi menjadi petunjuk. Kondisi ini menghambat mikroba mengurai materi tanaman dan meninggalkan lapisan gambut selama bertahun-tahun.<\/p>\n\n<p>Dari situ, tim mengidentifikasi tiga jenis vegetasi di mana gambut cenderung terbentuk. Dengan memanfaatkan peta satelit untuk mengidentifikasi area tertutup vegetasi jenis ini, mereka melakukan ekspedisi untuk menguji hipotesis tersebut.<\/p>\n<p>Langkah berikutnya adalah memperluas temuan dengan memetakan vegetasi berbasis penelitian lapanngan, dan mengolah data, sambil memegang sebagian data untuk menguji kualitas peta terbaru. Hasilnya menunjukkan angka menakjubkan 30 miliar ton karbon di wilayah yang sebelumnya tidak diketahui.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDengan kata lain, terdapat karbon setara wilayah hutan tropis terbesar kedua dunia, namun dalam wilayah yang jauh lebih kecil,\u201d kata Lewis.<\/p>\n<h4>PANDANGAN DARI ATAS, PANDANGAN DARI BAWAH<\/h4>\n<p>Penelitian berlanjut dengan metodologi berbeda untuk memprediksi dan mengkonfirmasi eksistensi gambut tropis, termasuk memanfaatkan temuan terbaru pemanfaatan satelit berkat kemajuan teknologi.<\/p>\n<p>Pada acara paralel di Bonn, Roman-Cuesta mempresentasikan sistem pemodelan ilmiah terbaru yang menawarkan hipotesis mengenai proses di balik formasi gambut, sebagai cara mengolah data satelit dalam menyusun peta gambut.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNegara tidak akan mampu melakukan penelitian lapangan tanpa petunjuk. Terlalu mahal dan tidak efisien. Suka atau tidak, data satelit dalam memetakan lahan basah dan lahan gambut menjadi kebutuhan dasar penelitian lapangan gambut masa depan,\u201d katanya.<\/p>\n<p>Menurut Roman-Cuesta, Selama beberapa dekade, satelit telah mendeteksi gambut melalui kebakaran, emisi metana, dan indikator gambut tak langsung lainnya, seperti jenis vegetasi atau tingkat kelembaban tanah.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cSatelit dapat memberi lebih dari data optik: presitipasi, topografi, temperatur atau emisi adalah produk umum keluarga satelit,\u201d tambahnya.<\/p>\n<p>Bagaimanapun, uji faktual lapangan masih tetap diperlukan untuk mengkonfirmasikan keberadaan gambut, atau juga membangun kolaborasi antara pemangku kepentingan elit dan masyarakat sebagai bagian esensial mengelola lahan gambut di dunia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TERANCAM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Temuan terbaru dari Basin Kongo berimplikasi besar bagi konservasi, mitigasi dan adaptasi perubahan iklim. Saat berbagai negara bergerak memasukkan lahan gambut dalam Komitmen Kontribusi Nasional (NDC) Perjanjian Paris, kemampuan menghitung kekayaan karbon makin diperlukan.<\/p>\n<p>Gambut kaya karbon temuan Lewis dkk. diperkirakan terakumulasi dalam Basin Kongo pada kecepatan 0,2 milimeter per tahun selama ribuan tahun. Gambut ini tersimpan dalam tanah selama keberadaan manusia di wilayah itu, sejak awal era holosen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIni mengapa penting menjaganya dan tidak membiarkannya lepas kembali ke atmofer,\u201d kata Lewis.<\/p>\n<p>Di wilayah tropis, lahan gambut berada dalam tekanan industri, pertanian, urbanisasi, dan meningkatnya frekuensi kebakaran dan kekeringan akibat perubahan iklim dan faktor lain. Gangguan terhadap ekosistem ini akan membuat pelepasan gas rumah kaca secara masif ke atmosfer. Sebaliknya, melindunginya berarti menjaga stok karbon terkunci di dalam tanah.<\/p>\n<p>Diperlukan penelitian lebih jauh mengenai karakteristik dan kondisi gambut tropis, denggan memanfaatkan data dari atas dan dari bawah.
