Selain sebagai perlindungan terhadap pulau, hutan bakau yang saat ini mencapai 230 hektar di Nusa Lembongan juga memberikan keuntungan ekonomis lain sebagai tempat wisata lingkungan.<\/p>\n<p>Selain kegiatan fisik, upaya penertiban hukum juga dilaksanakan. Masyarakat memberlakukan hukum adat yang dalam bahasa setempat disebut <em>awig-awig<\/em> untuk melarang penebangan bakau serta memberdayakan Pecalang (satuan pengamanan tradisional Bali) untuk mengawasi bila terjadi pelanggaran. Sanksi untuk pelanggaran adalah membersihkan pura selama 11 hari dan menyerahkan lima kilogram beras kepada kelompok masyarakat.<\/p>\n<p>Kepatuhan menjaga hutan yang dihubungan dengan hukum adat bukanlah hal yang baru bagi masyarakat Indonesia dan sering lebih berhasil daripada hukum di tingkat nasional. Masyarakat turun temurun melestarikan hutan karena pentingnya ekosistem ini untuk kelangsungan hidup mereka. Pengetahuan tradisional akan sistem menjaga lingkungan merupakan salah satu bagian penting yang seharusnya mendapat perhatian dari para ilmuwan.<\/p>\n<p>Para peneliti \u201charus mulai menaruh perhatian pada riset sosial seperti adat istiadat dan budaya masyarakat,\u201d dan tidak melulu berkutat di penelitian yang bersangkutan dengan alam, kata Marthen Welly dari Coral Triangle Center (CTC). Organisasi nirlaba ini berfokus pada pengembangan kapasitas masyarakat selaku pelaku konservasi dan berkomitmen menempatkan penelitian sosial berupa pengetahuan dan praktek tradisional  dalam program komunikasi mereka.<\/p>\n<p>Abdon Nababan, Sekretaris Jenderal Aliansi Masyarakat Adat Nusantara (AMAN) dalam seminar mengenai pengaman REDD beberapa waktu lalu juga mengingatkan supaya masyarakat jangan dijadikan subyek semata. Pendekatan kepada masyarakat perlu dilakukan karena mereka berhak untuk mendapatkan informasi atas apa yang terjadi di wilayah mereka sebelum memutuskan untuk setuju terhadap suatu sistem baru.<\/p>\n<p>Pendekatan dengan ilmu sosial merupakan salah satu cara jitu untuk merangkum inspirasi dalam masyarakat dan melalui pendekatan ini, akan diketahui cara-cara efektif untuk berkomunikasi melalui media yang tepat.
