Montpellier, Perancis \u2013 Kita tahu bahwa hutan berperan dalam mitigasi perubahan iklim. Namun kemampuan hutan yang seperti apa yang dapat membantu kita untuk beradaptasi dengan hal tersebut?<\/p>\n

Pernyataan pertama sudah diketahui dengan baik; namun yang kedua masih belum.<\/p>\n

Kesenjangan pengetahuan ini telah mendorong sebuah studi strategi masyarakat pedesaan berbasis hutan dalam upaya resiliensi terhadap variasi iklim antar tiga benua. Hasil awal dari riset ini di Indonesia menunjukkan bahwa hutan memegang peranan kunci terkait bagaimana masyarakat menghadapi bencana alam.<\/p>\n

\u201cPertanyaan riset kami adalah bagaimana hutan mampu mengurangi kerentanan masyarakat terhadap variasi iklim,\u201d ujar Florie Chazarin, seorang research fellow<\/em> di Pusat Penelitian Kehutanan Internasional (CIFOR).<\/p>\n

Chazarin, bersama dengan rekannya Giacomo Fedele, sedang melakukan sebuah studi komparatif di Peru, Burkina Faso dan Indonesia. Ketiga negara ini dipilih karena \u201cadanya peningkatan kerentanan terhadap bencana klimatis seperti kekeringan, banjir dan tanah longsor,\u201d terang Chazarin dalam konferensi terkini Resiliensi 2014<\/a> di Montpellier, Perancis.<\/p>\n

Lewat aktivitas partisipatif dengan masyarakat dan wawancara di tingkat rumah tangga, para periset bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana hutan memengaruhi pengetahuan dan sensitivitas mereka terhadap bencana, sekaligus kapasitas adaptif mereka untuk meresponnya.<\/p>\n

Hasil awal dari riset lapangan yang pertama di dua desa di Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia, menunjukkan bahwa masyarakat lokal sangat menggantungkan hutan untuk bersiaga menghadapi banjir dan mengurangi dampak yang terjadi.<\/p>\n

\u201cSebuah desa memiliki semacam regulasi yang melarang penebangan pohon di sepanjang sungai,\u201d terang Fedele. \u201cMereka sadar bahwa hutan berperan dalam pengendalian banjir. Sementara desa lainnya memiliki peraturan adat bahwa 15% (angka yang tinggi) dari penjualan kayu disumbangkan ke desa untuk perbaikan setelah banjir.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ketika banjir ekstrem melanda kedua desa tahun 2009, warga desa bergantung pada strategi bertahan jangka pendek, seperti membeli bahan pangan dan memindahkan barang-barang berharga ke tempat yang lebih aman, selain juga bentuk transformatif yang lebih radikal termasuk memindahkan lokasi desa \u2013 namun strategi-strategi ini kurang begitu tergantung pada hutan.<\/p>\n

\u201cHutan dan pepohonan sangat penting bagi kesiapsiagaan, termasuk dalam jangka waktu lama lewat jasa seperti pengurangan erosi,\u201d lanjut Fedele.<\/p>\n

\u201cHujan besar akan datang, namun itu berarti dampaknya akan semakin kecil.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fedele juga mencatat bahwa ketika sebuah desa menjadi lebih terjangkau, dengan lebih sedikit tutupan hutan sementara yang lainnya di lokasi yang lebih terpencil dengan areal berhutan yang lebat, hal ini tidak akan berpengaruh pada kerentanan ataupun tingkat resiliensi mereka pada pepohonan sebagai upaya kesiapsiagaan bencana.<\/p>\n

\u201cHal ini berhubungan dengan efek ambang dari tutupan pohon dalam jasa ekosistem,\u201d jelas Fedele. Ini berarti bahwa hutan yang memadai terletak di tempat yang tepat di kedua desa tersebut supaya mampu memainkan perannya, namun jika kondisinya terdegradasi di beberapa titik penting, maka ini akan berefek pada kapasitas masyarakat untuk beradaptasi terhadap peristiwa iklim.<\/p>\n

Ketika Chazarin dan Fedele mensurvei beberapa lokasi lain dalam beberapa bulan ke depan, temuan mereka dapat memengaruhi bagaimana kebutuhan adaptasi dipertimbangkan ketika konservasi hutan \u2013 sebuah upaya yang hingga saat ini menjadi satu-satunya cara untuk menyimpan karbon.<\/p>\n

Bruno Locatelli, seorang ilmuwan CIFOR yang mempelajari mitigasi dan adaptasi perubahan iklim, menyatakan bahwa temuan ini dapat diaplikasikan secara luas.<\/p>\n

\u201cDengan memanfaatkan riset ini, para pengembang proyek dapat menargetkan manfaat bagi ekosistem global sekaligus kebutuhan lokal lewat pengurangan kerentanan.\u201d<\/p>\n
