WARSAWA, Polandia (5 Desember 2013) \u2013 Membantu petani negara tropis menghadapi tantangan perubahan iklim merupakan keuntungan dari pendekatan bentang alam interdisipliner yang melingkupi kompleksitas konteks biofisik, sosial, dan politik di mana mereka tinggal dan bekerja, ujar seorang ilmuwan terkemuka.<\/p>\n

“Petani kecil di seluruh dunia sudah menggunakan pendekatan bentang alam untuk mengelola sumber daya. Kabar baik bagi mereka, akhirnya kami pun mengadopsi pendekatan itu,\u201d ujar Christine Padoch, direktur program kehutanan dan penghidupan pada Pusat Penelitian Kehutanan Internasional (CIFOR).<\/p>\n

\u201cIni merupakan suatu kemajuan karena kehutanan, pertanian, kegiatan konservasi dan pembangunan komunitas belum menggunakan pendekatan ini. Dapat terlihat dari banyaknya masalah yang dihadapi petani dalam upaya meningkatkan perikehidupan mereka,\u201d ujarnya pada Forum Bentang Alam Global<\/a> bersamaan dengan seminar iklim PBB yang lalu di Warsawa, Polandia.<\/p>\n

Sesi tersebut berfokus pada dampak perubahan iklim terhadap para petani kecil.<\/p>\n

Sebagian besar pemerintah memidanakan pembudidayaan yang berpindah-pindah, sebuah pendekatan bentang alam yang digunakan secara luas di negara-negara tropis, kata Padoch.<\/p>\n

Bentang alam yang diciptakan dan dikelola oleh peladang berpindah sangatlah dinamis \u2013 sebagai efeknya, hutan dan agrikultur berpindah tempat secara berputar dan siklis, ujar Padoch.<\/p>\n

\u201cKita harus memahami sistem kompleks ini dan berusaha memperbaikinya ketimbang mengutuk dan menggantinya. Sebagai contoh, kita tidak begitu mengetahui berapa banyak karbon yang mereka serap,\u201d katanya.<\/p>\n

Menghubungkan hutan dengan nutrisi dan kesehatan juga dapat menjadi komponen penting pendekatan bentang alam \u2013 CIFOR sedang melakukan riset tentang bagaimana tutupan hutan berkaitan dengan keanekaragaman makanan di sekitar 20 negara di Afrika dengan fokus khusus pada makanan anak-anak.<\/p>\n

\u201cAgar dapat bekerja secara maksimal menggunakan pendekatan bentang alam, kita membutuhkan berbagai jenis ilmu yang menjembatani sektor-sektor yang berbeda,\u201d kata Padoch.<\/p>\n

Panel yang terdiri atas Elwyn Grainger Jones dari Dana Internasional untuk Pengembangan Pertanian; Delia Catacuan dari Pusat Agroforestri Dunia; Bernard Giraud dari Dana Perikehidupan; Peter Dewees seorang penasihat kehutanan dari Bank Dunia; dan Alain Billand dari CIRAD, menjajaki tantangan bekerja dengan petani kecil menggunakan pendekatan bentang alam dan menerapkan perubahan dalam menanggulangi perubahan iklim.<\/p>\n
