Kebakaran di pulau Sumatera<\/a> dan di tempat lain yang terjadi setiap tahun<\/a>, seringkali menyebabkan masalah asap di negara-negara Asia Tenggara. Semua orang tampaknya setuju dengan pengamatan ini, dan banyak yang bertanya selama bulan terakhir dan di berbagai media: Mengapa, jika ini adalah masalah yang berulang, sudahkah ditangani dengan lebih tegas?<\/p>\n

Atau, sebetulnya, banyak pertanyaan muncul ketika asap masih mengambang di udara, tetapi perhatian tersebut menghilang bersama dengan asap. Untuk menggambarkan perhatian media besar terhadap kebakaran terakhir di Sumatera, kami membandingkan jumlah titik api dengan jumlah berita terkait dalam rentang waktu tertentu. Titik api yang dideteksi satelit<\/a> di atas Sumatera tampak memberikan gambaran akurat kebakaran di lapangan<\/a>. Kami melakukan pencarian Google untuk berita global mengenai kebakaran dan asap di Sumatera, dan memeriksa setiap hasilnya secara manual untuk keterkaitannya. Kami kemudian membandingkan jumlah titik api dengan 601 berita pada periode 1 Juni hingga 31 Agustus 2013 (gambar 1).<\/p>\n

Terdapat korespondensi yang luar biasa. Dari tingkat yang sangat rendah, artikel-artikel di media melonjak setelah hotspot (titik panas), dan kemudian bertahan selama sekitar satu minggu setelah puncak Juni kebakaran menetap. Kemudian, di akhir Agustus, kebakaran terjadi lagi, dan begitu pula dengan pemberitaan media – secara singkat.<\/p>\n

Keriuhan dan meredanya perhatian media besar dapat menjadi masalah dalam dua sudut pandang.<\/p>\n

Pertama, dalam meningkatnya dunia real-time<\/i> dan keterhubungan, pengambil keputusan memiliki kesadaran akut mengenai krisis-hari-ini yang mempengaruhi opini publik, tetapi keterkaitannya tidak bertahan ketika situasi kekinian berlalu dan peluang untuk menerapkan solusi jangka panjang muncul. Pada saat itu, krisis lain bisa muncul (di media), yang membutuhkan perhatian penuh, meskipun singkat.<\/p>\n

Kedua, terdapat bias nyata mengenai bencana mana yang<\/strong> berkembang di media besar dan begitu pula puncak tumpukan perhatian publik serta debat global. Prioritas ini tampaknya ditentukan oleh perhatian media sendiri<\/a> dan bangunan rasa \u201cnilai berita\u201d tertinggi bagi bencana kemanusiaan dan alam\u2014sepanjang mereka nyata, saat ini dan tersedia untuk menjual gambar\u2014seperti citra anak kecil tersedak asap. Ditambahkan selebriti seperti Harrison Ford<\/a> dan perhatian akan meningkat lebih jauh. Seringkali, seperti ketika membaca artikel NY Times mengenai laporan IPCC yang akan datang<\/a>, orang berpikir apakah tujuan utamanya menjamin keberlanjutan pertengkaran politik, atau fokus pada masalah dunia yang nyata.<\/p>\n

Isu jangka lebih panjang, berubah perlahan dengan minim gambar spektakuler kurang menarik perhatian media, dan kemudian kurang menarik publik lebih luas. Dari perspektif jangka panjang, asap mungkin bukan isu terpenting mengenai kondisi kebakaran saat ini, melebihi perhatian penduduk kota Singapura (yang perhatian nyatanya lebih pada kerugian finansial dan dampak kesehatan) dan kota lain. Kontribusi terhadap perubahan iklim dan hilangnya ekosistem akibat api bisa memberi dampak lebih besar pada kehidupan manusia. Tetapi CO2<\/sub> tidak terlihat seperti asap dan tidak membuat kita tersedak. Kerusakan ekosistem belum menjadi faktor signifikan ketika kita membeli makanan di toko swalayan.<\/p>\n

Menyeimbangkan tujuan jangka panjang dan prioritas pastilah bukan topik baru. Contohnya, seluruh ekonomi kita secara konstan terus mencari keseimbangan itu\u2014 dilihat dari suku bunga. Dunia baru terhubung dengan liputan berita di ujung jari, artinya terdapat peningkatan kekinian lebih menjadi fokus daripada masa depan. Salah satu cara mengungkapkan ini yaitu memperlihatkan peningkatan suku bunga, jadi membutuhkan sesuatu yang lebih dan upaya lebih untuk secara berhasil mengkaitkannya dengan masa depan kita bersama.<\/p>\n

CIFOR adalah satu dari banyak organisasi yang terlibat dalam menemukan jejak ke masa depan bersama. Satu tantangan kami adalah mengkomunikasikan hasil dan memperluas dampak jangka panjang. Sementara, media besar tidak menyediakan ruang konsisten untuk ini. Di sisi lain, publikasi ilmiah kurang bisa mengusung perubahan dalam dirinya sendiri.<\/p>\n

Organisasi riset dengan ambisi untuk memberi dampak, oleh karena itu harus melengkapi pekerjaan mereka dengan upaya komunikasi terus menerus yang menggabungkan kekakuan ilmiah dengan perhatian online<\/i> dan real-time<\/i>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

While at FAO he also coordinated the Global Forest Resources Assessment, played a leading role in establishing the UN-REDD program and led the development of the Climate Smart Agriculture concept.
