Paling-paling mereka pernah melihat dari jauh, ketika sedang berjalan-jalan ke Sumatera atau Kalimantan. Padahal, Indonesia memiliki hutan tropis ketiga terbesar di dunia setelah Brazil dan Congo.<\/p>\n<p>Para peserta International Youth Forum on Climate Change yang diselenggarakan di Jakarta tersebut bukannya tidak tertarik sama sekali dengan hutan dan deforestasi, sumber emisi terbesar di Indonesia. Buktinya mereka menghadiri dan mendengarkan presentasi dalam forum diskusi hutan dengan perhatian penuh. Masalahnya mungkin banyak anak muda, terutama yang hidup di kota di Jawa, pulau terpadat di dunia, yang tidak memiliki banyak kesempatan untuk bersentuhan langsung dengan hutan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAjak mereka (generasi muda) ke hutan supaya kita bisa melihat apa yang terjadi di hutan,\u201d kata Muhammad Nur Pratama, yang akrab dipanggil Tama, salah seorang panitia di forum tersebut. Untuk sekarang ini, masalah transportasi dan pemakaian energi adalah isu lingkungan yang paling menarik perhatiannya. \u201cSoalnya itu menyentuh hidup saya,\u201d kata Tama, yang bersepeda sejauh 8 km dari rumah ke sekolah di Jakarta setiap hari.<\/p>\n<p>Generasi muda semestinya didorong untuk peduli akan hutan karena deforestasi, terutama di hutan tropis, menyumbangkan hampir 20 persen dari total emisi gas rumah kaca di dunia, lebih besar dari emisi sektor transportasi. Dunia telah bersepakat untuk berusaha menangani masalah tersebut melalui skema REDD (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation), yang akan memberikan kompensasi kepada negara berkembang yang melindungi hutannya.<\/p>\n<p>Mekanisme inilah, yang mulai mengucurkan miliaran dolar Amerika untuk penanganan hutan, yang menarik perhatian Henry Wibowo kepada isu hutan. Dorjee Sun, CEO Carbon Conservation, yang menarik dana investasi untuk perlindungan hutan di Kalimantan sebagai penyimpan karbon, adalah idola Henry. \u201cDia menunjukkan bahwa kita bisa hijau dan menghasilkan uang,\u201d kata Henry, yang akan mengunjungi hutan di Kalimantan beberapa hari lagi sebagai bagian dari rangkaian kegiatan forum pemuda tersebut.<\/p>\n<p>Tentu saja hutan bukan hanya berfungsi untuk menyimpan karbon, tetapi tempat keanekaragaman hayati yang sangat perlu dilindungi. Sekitar 90 persen spesies yang ada di darat berdiam dalam hutan, menurut data Bank Dunia. Bahkan, hutan tropis Indonesia memiliki keanekaragaman hayati yang terkaya kedua di dunia.<\/p>\n<p>Tidak heran untuk Fairuza, partisipan dari Brunei Darussalam, kelestarian monyet bekantan yang berhidung panjang menjadi isu utama. \u201cSaya ingin bekantan, yang sekarang hampir punah, bisa jadi lebih banyak,\u201d kata Fairuza.
