Cairan yang terus bergelembung itu memproduksi withanolides \u2014 senyawa ampuh pereda stres yang telah menjadikan ashwagandha bagian penting dari pengobatan Ayurveda selama lebih dari 3.000 tahun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bagi para ilmuwan yang memantau layar-layar di ruang tersebut, ini adalah kemenangan teknologi yang disebut <em>precision fermentation<\/em>. Teknologi ini menjanjikan rantai pasok yang tidak lagi bergantung pada musim kering, serangan hama, atau gejolak geopolitik. Namun bagi sekitar 2,5 juta petani kecil yang membudidayakan tanaman ini di seluruh India, inovasi tersebut  bisa mengancam mata pencaharian mereka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Terobosan ilmiah ini, yang dipaparkan dalam <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41477-026-02220-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">studi terbaru di jurnal <em>Nature Plants<\/em><\/a>, tidak bermula dari ekspedisi pencarian sumber hayati ke Pegunungan Himalaya. Semuanya justru berawal dari ikon keranjang belanja. Para peneliti memperoleh bahan genetik \u2014 benih <em>Withania somnifera<\/em> \u2014 bukan melalui perjanjian pembagian manfaat dengan Otoritas Keanekaragaman Hayati Nasional India, melainkan dengan membeli satu paket benih dari penjual di Amazon.com.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kini, ketika komunitas internasional bersiap menuju <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unccd.int\/cop17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Konferensi Para Pihak ke-17 (COP17)<\/a> Konvensi Keanekaragaman Hayati (CBD) yang akan digelar di Armenia akhir tahun ini, transaksi yang tampak sepele itu menjadi simbol persoalan yang lebih dalam di bioekonomi global. Celah sederhana ini menyingkap retakan serius dalam keadilan lingkungan dunia: sementara para diplomat di Cali dan Jenewa masih memperdebatkan mekanisme dana sukarela, pengambilan warisan genetik secara digital bisa saja sudah berlangsung \u2014 satu klik pembayaran daring pada satu waktu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-demam-emas-merah-muda-vs-pabrik-mikroba\"><strong><strong>Demam \u201cEmas Merah Muda\u201d vs. Pabrik Mikroba<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ashwagandha bukan sekadar semak liar. Di India, tanaman ini kerap dijuluki \u201cemas merah muda\u201d karena menjadi komoditas bernilai tinggi yang menopang kehidupan masyarakat pedesaan, terutama di wilayah-wilayah yang kondisi lingkungannya rentan. Pada 2024, penjualan ashwagandha di pasar utama Amerika Serikat saja mencapai USD 144,5 juta, menjadikannya suplemen herbal terlaris ketiga di negara tersebut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bagi para petani di distrik seperti Neemuch dan Mandsaur, tanaman ini memberikan keuntungan yang jauh lebih tinggi dibandingkan tanaman serealia tradisional. Ashwagandha juga menjadi penyangga ekonomi penting di tengah ketidakpastian iklim. Namun, ketika ragi hasil rekayasa genetika kini mampu memproduksi withanolides di laboratorium, hubungan antara pasar global dan ladang-ladang petani itu terancam terputus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dengan mengidentifikasi klaster gen spesifik pada tanaman tersebut dan \u201cmengunggahnya\u201d ke dalam ragi (<em>Saccharomyces cerevisiae<\/em>), para peneliti pada dasarnya telah menciptakan \u201cpabrik withanolide super efisien.\u201d Artinya, produksi senyawa obat ini kini bisa dipisahkan dari tanaman aslinya. Jika teknologi ini dikembangkan dalam skala besar, petani India bisa tersingkir dan hanya menjadi pemasok komoditas mentah bernilai rendah, sementara produksi berkualitas tinggi untuk kebutuhan klinis berpindah ke tangki-tangki fermentasi di negara-negara Global Utara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kita pernah melihat pola seperti ini sebelumnya. Ketika perusahaan biologi sintetis berhasil merekayasa ragi untuk memproduksi vanilin, produk tersebut dipasarkan sebagai \u201calami\u201d dan mengguncang mata pencaharian petani vanila di Madagaskar. Foto oleh Dinesh Valke.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-celah-nagoya-ketika-atom-berubah-menjadi-bit-data\"><strong>\u201cCelah Nagoya\u201d: Ketika atom berubah menjadi bit data<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Di balik kontroversi ini ada perubahan besar yang belum sepenuhnya mampu diikuti oleh hukum internasional: pergeseran sumber daya hayati dari bentuk fisik menjadi informasi digital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Selama ini, berdasarkan Protokol Nagoya yang diadopsi pada 2010, siapa pun yang memanfaatkan sumber daya genetik wajib memperoleh persetujuan atas dasar informasi awal (<em>prior informed consent<\/em>) serta berbagi manfaat dengan negara penyedia. Namun di laboratorium Boston tersebut, persetujuan semacam itu tidak pernah diminta. Para peneliti cukup mengurutkan DNA dari benih yang dibeli secara komersial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Begitu genom suatu tanaman diurutkan dan diunggah sebagai informasi sekuens digital (<em>digital sequence information<\/em> atau DSI) ke dalam basis data, tanaman fisiknya secara teori tidak lagi dibutuhkan untuk penemuan obat. Laboratorium di Boston, Berlin, atau Beijing cukup mengunduh \u201ckode\u201d genetik tersebut dan mensintesis senyawa yang diinginkan, tanpa pernah berhubungan dengan negara asal sumber daya genetik itu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ketimpangan regulasi ini semakin tajam karena faktor geopolitik. Amerika Serikat bukan pihak dalam Konvensi Keanekaragaman Hayati (CBD), sehingga para penelitinya beroperasi dalam semacam \u201czona aman\u201d regulasi. Dengan membeli benih dari penjual domestik di AS, mereka dapat menghindari kewajiban hukum yang seharusnya berlaku jika tanaman itu diambil langsung dari India. Praktik ini pada dasarnya \u201cmencuci\u201d sumber daya genetik dari kewajiban kedaulatannya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dana-cali-macan-kertas\"><strong><strong>\u201cDana Cali\u201d: Macan Kertas?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pada akhir 2024, dalam COP16 di Cali, Kolombia, negara-negara di dunia berupaya menutup celah ini. Mereka mengadopsi Keputusan 16\/2 yang membentuk \u201cDana Cali\u201d, sebuah mekanisme multilateral global untuk membagi manfaat dari pemanfaatan informasi sekuens digital (DSI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mekanisme ini dipuji sebagai langkah bersejarah. Perusahaan-perusahaan besar yang memanfaatkan DSI \u201cdiundang\u201d untuk menyisihkan sebagian keuntungan mereka ke dalam dana global bagi konservasi keanekaragaman hayati. Keputusan tersebut menetapkan angka kontribusi indikatif sebesar 1% dari laba atau 0,1% dari pendapatan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yang krusial, bagi banyak negara, kontribusi ini masih bersifat sukarela. Teks final keputusan menyebut perusahaan \u201cseharusnya\u201d (<em>should<\/em>) berkontribusi, bukan \u201cwajib\u201d (<em>shall<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Artinya, bagi perusahaan rintisan bioteknologi di Massachusetts, saat ini tidak ada kewajiban hukum internasional untuk menyetor dana ke Dana Cali. Menyadari lemahnya kesepakatan internasional, India pada 2025 memberlakukan Peraturan Keanekaragaman Hayati (Akses dan Pembagian Manfaat) yang baru. Foto oleh CIFOR-ICRAF.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-menutup-celah\"><strong>Menutup celah<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Menjelang COP17 yang akan digelar di Yerevan, Armenia, pada 2026, kasus ashwagandha menjadi peringatan keras. \u201cCelah Nagoya\u201d menunjukkan bahwa mekanisme sukarela tidak lagi memadai di era biologi digital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Untuk mewujudkan bioekonomi yang benar-benar adil, setidaknya ada tiga perubahan penting yang perlu dilakukan: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ketertelusuran universal.<\/strong> Kantor paten harus mewajibkan pemohon untuk mengungkapkan asal geografis bahan hayati yang digunakan, meskipun bahan tersebut dibeli secara komersial. Alasan \u201cdibeli di Amazon\u201d seharusnya tetap memicu kewajiban untuk menyebutkan negara asal sumber daya genetiknya.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Memperkuat Dana Cali.<\/strong> Perubahan dari kontribusi yang sekadar \u201cindikatif\u201d menjadi \u201cwajib\u201d kemungkinan akan menjadi medan perdebatan utama di COP17. Tanpa kewajiban yang mengikat, Dana Cali berisiko berubah menjadi sekadar kotak amal, bukan instrumen keadilan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Berinvestasi pada \u201cfitomanufaktur\u201d.<\/strong> Alih-alih menggantikan petani, bioekonomi seharusnya memberdayakan mereka.
