Berbagi tawa dan saling menyemprot, Yasuke Okimoto (Oki) dan Sigit Deni Sasmito membersihkan diri setelah melakukan riset seharian di hutan mangrove di Kalimantan.<\/p>\n

“Meneliti mangrove di lapangan itu seperti bermain-main dalam lumpur – layaknya taman bermain, kami harus memanjat dan menuruni akar-akar tunjang seperti kera,” ujar Oki, ilmuwan Jepang dari Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR)<\/a> yang telah bertahun-tahun bekerja di hutan-hutan mangrove di Indonesia, Vietnam, dan Thailand.<\/p>\n

Sigit, peneliti muda Indonesia yang baru satu tahun berkarir di CIFOR \u2013 namun ia sudah bekerja di salah satu lingkungan hutan paling menantang.<\/p>\n

“Saya memakai sepatu selam untuk scuba diving, karena jika memakai sepatu bot akan terjebak di lumpur. Saya juga terlindung dari gigitan serangga-serangga kecil,” ujarnya.<\/p>\n

“Mencabut akar mangrove dari dalam lumpur untuk menilai cadangan karbon butuh tenaga ekstra.”<\/p>\n

“Kami harus tangguh,” tambah Oki.<\/p>\n

Namun, tak peduli lumpur dan nyamuk, keduanya menikmati pekerjaannya.<\/p>\n

“Saya mencintai pekerjaan di hutan mangrove – ini lebih baik daripada bekerja di kantor,” kata Sigit.<\/p>\n

“Berat badan saya ketika bekerja di lapangan bahkan bertambah karena kami menyantap begitu banyak makanan nikmat seperti kepiting, udang dan ikan yang hidup di lingkungan mangrove – dan kami bisa memancing ikan bersama para pekerja dan mitra.”<\/p>\n

“Saya mendapat tujuh ikan dan Oki hanya dapat enam. Saya pemenang lomba memancing ini!”<\/p>\n

Kedua ilmuwan muda itu mengerjakan proyek CIFOR yang berkaitan dengan pengukuran total tangkapan karbon dari berbagai jenis ekosistem mangrove<\/a> dengan perhatian khusus pada biomassa akar bawah tanah pepohonannya, yang hingga kini belum banyak diteliti.<\/p>\n

Ini kali pertama dalam sejumlah kunjungan ke lokasi yang sama – konsesi pembalakan di Kubu Raya, Kalimantan Barat – dan para ilmuwan belum sanggup mendapat informasi akurat mengenai jadwal pasang-surut laut setempat.<\/p>\n

Artinya, selama sepekan penelitian, air surut terjadi ketika malam. Hal ini menimbulkan sejumlah tantangan ekstra.<\/p>\n

Tim peneliti harus menembus mangrove ketika air masih setinggi dada – dan hal itu menyebabkan pengambilan sampel tanah menjadi sulit. Pasalnya, sampel-sampel itu harus dikumpulkan dekat dengan waktu air surut.<\/p>\n

“Kami diperingatkan oleh warga setempat bahwa buaya muara mulai muncul di malam hari, yakni mulai pukul 6 sore hingga 6 pagi,” ujar Oki.<\/p>\n

“Namun, karena kami kesulitan dengan ketinggian air pasang, kami harus menunggu hingga petang dalam mengumpulkan sampel tanah serta melakukan pengukuran tingkat keasaman serta kadar garam.”<\/p>\n

“Atasan kami memberitahukan bahwa ketika larut malam, ketinggian air akan cukup bagi kami untuk melakukan pengukuran. Ia bilang, “Oki, Sigit, ayo kita ke lapangan malam-malam saat buaya berkeliaran. Kalian berani atau tidak?”<\/p>\n

Untungnya, ia hanya bergurau – dan mereka berhasil mengambil sampel tepat sebelum senja datang dan kembali ke base camp tanpa harus berhadapan dengan reptil berukuran besar.<\/p>\n
