Sejak tahun 1972 sampai sekarang, 21 Maret diperingati sebagai Hari Kehutanan Dunia, tetapi tahun lalu Majelis Umum PBB mengangkatnya menjadi salah satu hari peringatan resmi PBB.<\/p>\n<p>Saat ini ada sekitar 115 hari internasional yang diperingati oleh PBB, dan 21 Maret menjadi salah satu yang cukup populer. Tanggal ini juga dikenal sebagai Hari Puisi Dunia, Hari Internasional untuk Eliminasi Diskriminasi Ras, Hari Internasional Nowruz, dan Hari Down Sindrom Internasional. Selain itu, 2013 adalah tahun internasional untuk Kerjasama Air dan Quinoa, dan kita berada dalam dekade internasional untuk Keanekaragaman Hayati, Aksi untuk Keamanan Berkendara, Pengentasan Kolonialisme dan lain-lain. Meski protokol PBB tidak selalu mudah diikuti, namun sebuah aplikasi app telah mempermudah kita untuk mengikuti peringatan-peringatan tersebut.<\/p>\n<p>Di CIFOR, kami telah mencari sudut pandang baru untuk memperingati hari ini. Sebagai sebuah organisasi kehutanan dengan program komunikasi yang intensif, setiap hari kami telah memfokuskan pada peningkatan kesadaran. Bahkan sepertinya kurang pantas untuk memanfaatkan lagi hari ini sebagai ajang promosi aktivitas kami. Lagi pula, menurut saya kebanyakan orang telah paham akan keberadaan hutan. Namun, persepsi umumnya adalah bahwa hutan sedang terancam dan harus dilindungi dari perusakan oleh manusia. Deforestasi, pembalakan liar, kebakaran hutan, hilangnya keanekaragaman hayati, kekeringan \u2013 adalah daftar masalah yang panjang dan banyak diketahui. Masyarakat perkotaan yang semakin bertambah telah dibombardir dengan semacam pesan negatif tentang hutan dan kampanye yang dilakukan mungkin tidak seluruhnya seimbang.<\/p>\n<p>Berdasarkan hal tersebut, saya mengusulkan untuk memanfaatkan Hari Hutan Internasional sebagai ajang untuk berbagi pandangan positif tentang hutan dan pepohonan: Hutan menyediakan pendapatan, pangan dan energi untuk miliaran orang. Hutan juga mengakumulasikan sebuah porsi yang besar dari gas rumah kaca yang kita hasilkan. Pepohonan menjaga kestabilan lanskap, menjadikannya tetap produktif dan estetis. Hutan tanaman melindungi tanah dan menyediakan bahan yang dapat diperbarui untuk ekonomi hijau. Hutan melindungi keanekaragaman hayati dan menyediakan tempat untuk rekreasi dan tempat berlindung.<\/p>\n<p>Jadi, mari manfaatkan hari ini untuk berpikir positif tentang hutan. Secara pribadi, saya akan merayakan hari ini dengan menanam pohon lagi (ShoreaGuiso, spesies dipterocarp yang kayunya banyak bermanfaat, termasuk untuk mebel dan lantai) di lingkungan kantor CIFOR.<\/p>\n<p>Saya akan mengusulkan satu hal lagi. Manfaatkan hari ini untuk menghubungkan antara hutan dengan bentang alam dan dalam kaitannya dengan masyarakat yang lebih luas serta kebutuhannya. Berdasar resolusi PBB, hari ini bukan hanya tentang hutan, namun tentang keseluruhan bentang alam. Dr. Holmgren has a PhD in Forestry and 26 years of experience in international forestry and agriculture. Prior to CIFOR, Dr. Holmgren worked at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), where he led FAO\u2019s work on climate change and its contributions to the UNFCCC process. While at FAO he also coordinated the Global Forest Resources Assessment, played a leading role in establishing the UN-REDD program and led the development of the Climate Smart Agriculture concept. Dr. Holmgren is credited for leading the dialogue to enhance and broaden the role of forestry in the Global Development Agenda to address the major challenges of our time: poverty, food security, climate change and green economy.
