Permintaan cula badak yang meningkat, terutama di Asia, membawa peningkatan yang tajam baik di harga maupun peristiwa perburuan liar. Hal ini menimbulkan dampak yang  sangat merusak populasi badak di Asia dan Afrika<\/p>\n<p>Tahun lalu penelitian telah memastikan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forestsnews.org\/4876\/killed-for-keratin-the-unnecessary-extinction-of-the-rhinoceros\/#.UCSD2UJzr8s\">kepunahan badak Jawa di Vietnam<\/a> dan Badak Hitam Barat (Western Black Rhino) di Kamerun . Pada tahun 2010 dan 2011, <a href=\"http:\/\/wwf.panda.org\/what_we_do\/endangered_species\/rhinoceros\/african_rhinos\/poaching_crisis_african_rhinos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">hampir satu badak ditembak setiap hari di bagian selatan Afrika<\/a>. Banyak laporan media menunjukkan bahwa perang melawan perburuan liar sedang mengalami kekalahan, bukan hanya untuk badak tetapi untuk harimau, gajah, ikan hiu dan banyak spesies lain yang diperdagangkan di pasar internasional, sebagian besar secara ilegal. The World Conservation Union (IUCN) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/news\/securing-the-web-of-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">memperkirakan bahwa sampai dengan 25% dari hewan-hewan di dunia <\/a> terancam punah.<\/p>\n<p>Namun, setidaknya untuk badak, harapan baru untuk konservasi spesies ini muncul dari sumber yang paling tidak terduga. Indonesia, yang merupakan rumah dari badak Jawa (<em>Rhinoceros sondaicus sondaicus<\/em>) dan badak Sumatera (<em>Dicerorhinus sumatrensis<\/em>) yang tergolong spesies yang sangat terancam punah, baru-baru ini menjadi berita hangat dengan kabar baik yang jarang terdengar.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10632\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10632\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forestsnews.org\/10629\/indonesia-brings-new-hope-for-rhino-conservation\/rhino-plaque\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10632\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10632\" title=\"New conservation initiatives might help Indonesian rhinos avoid this fate. Terry Sunderland\" src=\"\/\/www.forestsnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/rhino-plaque-500x374.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"374\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10632\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Inisiatif-inisiatif baru untuk konservasi dapat membantu badak di Indonesia untuk terlepas dari nasib buruk ini. <em>Terry Sunderland<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Pada bulan Juni, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejakartaglobe.com\/home\/rare-baby-sumatran-rhinoceros-named-a-gift-from-god\/526716\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">lahir badak Sumatera yang keempat dalam penangkaran <\/a>di Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary di Lampung, Sumatera Selatan. Baru-baru ini, jebakan kamera telah menangkap citra sampai tujuh ekor badak di hutan Leuser di Aceh di bagian utara Sumatera. Ini merupakan hasil pemotretan pertama yang tercatat dari  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejakartaglobe.com\/home\/rare-baby-sumatran-rhinoceros-named-a-gift-from-god\/536685\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">sub-populasi badak tersebut selama lebih dari 26 tahun<\/a>. Meskipun hal-hal tadi tampak seperti keberhasilan sederhana jika dibandingkan dengan ribuan laporan mengenai perburuan liar yang terorganisir dan kepunahan lokal, laporan-laporan itu menunjukkan bahwa pihak konservasi tidak sepenuhnya kalah dalam pertarungan ini. Paling tidak, belum sepenuhnya kalah.<\/p>\n<p>Menempatkan Indonesia di garda terdepan dalam konservasi badak, Presiden Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono baru-baru ini mencanangkan tanggal 5 Juni 2012 sebagai awal dari Tahun Badak Internasional. Pencanangan ini terjadi atas <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iucn.org\/media\/media_advisories\/?10063\/2012-marks-the-start-of-The-International-Year-of-the-Rhino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">permintaan IUCN<\/a> dengan harapan agar membangkitkan tindakan untuk melindungi badak Jawa dan Sumatera dalam jangka panjang dan juga mendorong konservasi badak di negara-negara lain, baik di Asia maupun Afrika.<\/p>\n<p>Pencanangan ini memberikan itikad politik yang telah diminta beberapa organisasi karena adanya dampak parah perburuan liar badak untuk culanya untuk memasok pasar yang terus berkembang, yang kabarnya <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unodc.org\/documents\/southernafrica\/Bulletin_on_organised_crime_in_Southern_Africa\/UNODC_ROSAF_-_Bulletin_on_Organised_Crime_in_Southern_Africa_-_Issue_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">dijalankan oleh sindikat penjahat terorganisir<\/a>. Inisiatif tingkat tinggi dari sebuah pemerintah semacam itu belum pernah terjadi sebelumnya dalam konservasi internasional dan disambut baik oleh banyak kelompok seperti WWF, IUCN dan Konvensi Perdagangan Internasional Untuk Spesies Terancam Punah (CITES).<\/p>\n<p>Tantangannya sekarang adalah untuk menjaga momentum. Badak Jawa, yang diperkirakan berjumlah sekitar 45-50 ekor, terisolasi di salah satu wilayah terakhir hutan alam yang tersisa di Jawa Barat yaitu di Taman Nasional Ujung Kulon. Badak Sumatera bahkan berada dalam keadaan yang lebih menghawatirkan, dengan populasi total sekitar 150 ekor di empat taman nasional yang sangat berbeda-beda keadaannya di Sumatera dengan berbagai tingkat perlindungan efektif, dan semuanya berada di bawah desakan lahan perkebunan. Karena itu, Presiden Indonesia telah menetapkan suatu satuan tugas yang terdiri atas para ahli nasional dan internasional untuk menangani perlindungan dan pengelolaan populasi badak terakhir ini.<\/p>\n<p>Tentu saja, ada pihak-pihak yang mengkritisi konservasi satu spesies, dan banyak yang mengatakan bahwa, dengan sumber daya yang terbatas untuk konservasi, pendekatan ekosistem yang jauh lebih menyeluruh akan lebih efektif. Melindungi habitat berarti melindungi spesies di dalamnya. Tentu saja berbagai pendekatan konservasi masih harus memperhitungkan populasi penduduk yang bertumbuh dan kesejahteraan mereka serta keinginan pembangunan ekonomi yang wajar adanya.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10633\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10633\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forestsnews.org\/10629\/indonesia-brings-new-hope-for-rhino-conservation\/rhino-old\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10633\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10633\" title=\"Javan rhinos at Ujung Kulon National Park A. Hoogerwerf\/ The Rhino Resource Center.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Namun, pemaduan konservasi, baik pada tingkat spesies maupun ekosistem, dengan kebutuhan pembangunan penduduk setempat dan kepentingan ekonomi pemerintah dan perusahaan multi-nasional merupakan sasaran yang selama ini sulit dicapai. Pihak-pihak lain mungkin akan mengatakan bahwa, setelah adanya berbagai investasi dan pernyataan niat, kita sebenarnya belum menemukan cara yang tepat untuk menggabungkan keduanya.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iucnworldconservationcongress.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">World Conservation Congress (Kongres Konservasi Dunia)<\/a> mendatang yang akan diselenggarakan di Jeju, Korea pada awal September 2012 akan berupaya untuk menilai kembali apa yang perlu dilakukan untuk melestarikan keanekaragaman hayati dunia yang masih tersisa dan yang saat ini berkurang dengan cepat. Salah satu isu utama dalam agendanya adalah konservasi populasi badak terakhir di Asia dan Afrika di masa depan.
