Photo: Flickr<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Le <a href=\"\/\/www.cifor.org\/forests-and-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span lang=\"zxx\">r<\/span><span lang=\"zxx\">\u00f4le de la d\u00e9fore<\/span><span lang=\"zxx\">station tropicale dans le changement climatique mondial<\/span><\/a> a fait l&rsquo;objet de beaucoup de discussions et de d\u00e9bats internationaux dans les m\u00e9dias, ainsi que lors des forums politiques tels que la Convention des Nations Unies sur le Changement Climatique. Cependant, le r\u00f4le de la d\u00e9forestation dans le changement des climats locaux a re\u00e7u beaucoup moins d&rsquo;attention.<\/p>\n<p>Actuellement, face \u00e0 la <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/jan\/23\/brazil-worst-drought-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span lang=\"zxx\">s\u00e9cheresse sans pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent<\/span><span lang=\"zxx\"> dont souffre le sud du Br\u00e9sil<\/span><\/a>, l&rsquo;attention se tourne vers les impacts \u00e0 une \u00e9chelle plus locale de la d\u00e9forestation. Dr Antonio Nobre, chercheur \u00e0 l&rsquo;Institut Br\u00e9silien de Recherche Spatiale, a publi\u00e9 un rapport intitul\u00e9 \u00ab<span lang=\"zxx\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccst.inpe.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/The_Future_Climate_of_Amazonia_Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Le climat futur de l&rsquo;Amazonie<\/a><\/span>\u00bb qui lie la s\u00e9cheresse actuelle \u00e0 la d\u00e9forestation dans le bassin de l\u2019Amazone. <span lang=\"zxx\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/deforestation-sparks-brazilian-debate-1417717648\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Les politiques s\u2019interrogent sur ces conclusions<\/a><\/span>. Que dit la science ?<\/p>\n<h4>RELATION ENTRE LES ARBRES ET LES PR\u00c9CIPITATIONS ?<\/h4>\n<p>En 2009, les chercheurs du CIFOR, Douglas Sheil et Daniel Murdiyarso, ont r\u00e9sum\u00e9 la compr\u00e9hension scientifique de la relation entre les for\u00eats et les pr\u00e9cipitations <a href=\"\/\/www.cifor.org\/library\/2770\/how-forests-attract-rain-an-examination-of-a-new-hypothesis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span lang=\"zxx\">dans un article <\/span><span lang=\"zxx\"><span lang=\"de-DE\">publi<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"zxx\"><span lang=\"de-DE\">\u00e9 <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"zxx\"><span lang=\"de-DE\">dans <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"zxx\">BioScience<\/span><\/a>. \u00c0 l&rsquo;\u00e9poque, le lien entre la d\u00e9forestation et la diminution des pr\u00e9cipitations \u00e9tait encore inconnu. Il existait certaines indications dans la litt\u00e9rature scientifique, selon lesquelles le d\u00e9boisement perturberait la formation des nuages et accentuerait la saisonnalit\u00e9 des pr\u00e9cipitations dans les zones ayant des saisons s\u00e8ches et humides distinctes.<\/p>\n<p>Les preuves s\u2019accumulaient pour montrer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WBkOos12Xzs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span lang=\"zxx\">qu&rsquo;une quantit\u00e9 importante de<\/span><span lang=\"zxx\"><span lang=\"de-DE\">s<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"zxx\"> pluie<\/span><span lang=\"zxx\"><span lang=\"de-DE\">s<\/span><\/span> <span lang=\"zxx\"><span lang=\"de-DE\">t<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"zxx\">omb<\/span><span lang=\"zxx\"><span lang=\"de-DE\">ant<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"zxx\"> \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur des continents <\/span><span lang=\"zxx\"><span lang=\"de-DE\">e<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"zxx\">st recycl\u00e9e <\/span><\/a>&#8211; ce qui signifie que l&rsquo;eau, qui est tomb\u00e9e auparavant pr\u00e8s des marges continentales, est pomp\u00e9e dans l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re par la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation et retombe de nouveau.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WBkOos12Xzs?rel=0\" width=\"512\" height=\"288\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>C\u2019est le cas dans de nombreuses r\u00e9gions du monde. Aux \u00c9tats-Unis, <span lang=\"zxx\"><a href=\"http:\/\/journals.ametsoc.org\/doi\/full\/10.1175\/1525-7541(2002)003%3C0149:WVTADO%3E2.0.CO%3B2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">50% des pr\u00e9cipitations dans le Midwest sont recycl\u00e9es<\/a><\/span>; dans le Sahel en Afrique de l&rsquo;Ouest, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/002216949402632L\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span lang=\"zxx\"><span lang=\"de-DE\">c<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"zxx\">e <\/span><span lang=\"zxx\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">chiffre<\/span><\/span> <span lang=\"zxx\">est de 90%<\/span><\/a>. Dans certaines r\u00e9gions, une quantit\u00e9 importante d&rsquo;eau tombant sous forme de pluie n\u2019est cependant pas recycl\u00e9e. Par exemple, <a href=\"http:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007%2Fs00382-004-0461-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span lang=\"zxx\">seulement environ 3<\/span><span lang=\"zxx\">0 \u00e0 60% de l\u2019eau de pluie est recycl\u00e9e dans le bassi<\/span><span lang=\"zxx\">n de l&rsquo;Amazone<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Un des myst\u00e8res au moment de l&rsquo;article de M. Sheil et M. Murdiyarso \u00e9tait de savoir comment les terres basses et plates \u00e0 l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur des continents maintiennent des milieux humides. Si le recyclage est le m\u00e9canisme cl\u00e9 qui permet aux pr\u00e9cipitations d\u2019atteindre l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur des continents, alors les pr\u00e9cipitations devraient diminuer avec l\u2019augmentation de la distance de la c\u00f4te. En effet, ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne peut \u00eatre observ\u00e9 dans de nombreux endroits du monde \u2013 sauf l\u00e0 o\u00f9 il y a de vastes zones de for\u00eats naturelles.<\/p>\n<h4>UNE \u00abPOMPE BIOTIQUE\u00bb<\/h4>\n<p>Au milieu des ann\u00e9es 2000, deux physiciens &#8211; Anastassia Makarieva et Victor Gorshkov de l\u2019Institut de Physique Nucl\u00e9aire \u00e0 St Petersburg \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bioticregulation.ru\/ab.php?id=hess07\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span lang=\"zxx\">ont expos\u00e9 un nouveau ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne physique<\/span><\/a> pour expliquer comment les for\u00eats tropicales gardent l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur des continents humides. Dans ces r\u00e9gions, les for\u00eats ont des taux d&rsquo;\u00e9vaporation plus \u00e9lev\u00e9s que d\u2019autres types de v\u00e9g\u00e9tation. Lorsque l&rsquo;air humide s\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8ve des for\u00eats vers l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re, la vapeur d&rsquo;eau se condense. Ceci diminue le volume de l&rsquo;air et la pression de l&rsquo;air chute.<\/p>\n<p>Puisque l&rsquo;air s\u2019\u00e9coule des lieux ayant une haute pression vers ceux ayant une basse pression, cette diminution de la pression aspire de l&rsquo;air dense suppl\u00e9mentaire. Ainsi, les for\u00eats attirent de l&rsquo;air humide d&rsquo;ailleurs (par exemple, de au-dessus des oc\u00e9ans). Cette air humide suppl\u00e9mentaire monte et se condense \u00e0 son tour. Ceci g\u00e9n\u00e8re une situation o\u00f9 une grande proportion de l&rsquo;eau, qui se condense en nuages au-dessus des zones humides, est aspir\u00e9e d\u2019ailleurs.<\/p>\n<p>Mme Makarieva et M. Gorshkov appellent ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne \u00ab<span lang=\"zxx\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bioticregulation.ru\/pump\/pump.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">pompe biotique<\/a><\/span>\u00bb ; ils l\u2019ont d\u00e9montr\u00e9 avec des donn\u00e9es provenant du bassin du fleuve Amazone et de celui du fleuve Congo en Afrique \u00e9quatoriale. D&rsquo;autres scientifiques ont commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00e9tudier ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne et ont fourni des preuves suppl\u00e9mentaires de l&rsquo;existence de la pompe biotique. En 2012, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v489\/n7415\/full\/nature11390.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span lang=\"zxx\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">Dominick Spracklen et ses coll<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"zxx\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">\u00e8<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"zxx\"><span lang=\"fr-FR\">gues<\/span><\/span><\/a> ont fait des recherches \u00e0 travers des tropiques et ont constat\u00e9 que lorsque l&rsquo;air passe au-dessus d\u2019une v\u00e9g\u00e9tation extensive, elle produit au moins deux fois plus de pluie que l&rsquo;air qui passe au-dessus de peu de v\u00e9g\u00e9tation.<\/p>\n<p>Afin de comprendre l&rsquo;effet de la d\u00e9forestation sur les pr\u00e9cipitations, <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.ametsoc.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1175\/JHM-D-12-0190.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span lang=\"zxx\">M<\/span><span lang=\"zxx\"><span lang=\"de-DE\">me M<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"zxx\">akarieva <\/span><span lang=\"zxx\"><span lang=\"de-DE\">et ses c<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"zxx\"><span lang=\"de-DE\">oll\u00e8g<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"zxx\"><span lang=\"de-DE\">ues sont all<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"zxx\"><span lang=\"de-DE\">\u00e9<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"zxx\"><span lang=\"de-DE\">s plus loin encore<\/span><\/span><\/a> et ont int\u00e9gr\u00e9 ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne physique dans un mod\u00e8le climatique. Puisque le d\u00e9bit majeur d&rsquo;air du bassin de l&rsquo;Amazone provient de l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an Atlantique et puisque la plupart de la d\u00e9forestation se produit sur les flancs est et sud du bassin, il y a lieu de s\u2019inqui\u00e9ter. Leur simulation montre que la poursuite de la d\u00e9forestation dans le bassin de l&rsquo;Amazone risque d\u2019aboutir \u00e0 une baisse des pr\u00e9cipitations.<\/p>\n<h4>DES RIVI\u00c8RES DANS LE CIEL<\/h4>\n<p>L&rsquo;id\u00e9e que l&rsquo;eau s\u2019\u00e9coule dans l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re sur des voies observables n\u2019est pas nouvelle, elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 propos\u00e9e la premi\u00e8re fois dans un article de <span lang=\"zxx\"><a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1029\/92GL02916\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Reginald Newell et autres dans Geophysical Research Letters en 1992<\/a><\/span>. Plusieurs \u00e9tudes l\u2019ont confirm\u00e9 et ont d\u00e9montr\u00e9, en outre, que ces \u00abrivi\u00e8res a\u00e9riennes\u00bb sont responsables des pr\u00e9cipitations dans le sud du Br\u00e9sil. Contrairement aux rivi\u00e8res terrestres, ces rivi\u00e8res a\u00e9riennes obtiennent l&rsquo;eau de la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation, qui extrait l&rsquo;eau du sol, et la rel\u00e2chent \u00e0 travers des pr\u00e9cipitations.<\/p>\n<p>Au cours de la derni\u00e8re d\u00e9cennie, plusieurs groupes ont \u00e9tudi\u00e9 ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne et notre compr\u00e9hension de l&rsquo;importance de ces rivi\u00e8res a\u00e9riennes a augment\u00e9. En particulier, nous comprenons maintenant comment ces flux massifs d&rsquo;eau dans l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re sont li\u00e9s aux pr\u00e9cipitations du continent sud-am\u00e9ricain.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"zxx\"><a href=\"http:\/\/journals.ametsoc.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1175\/2011JCLI4189.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">L&rsquo;\u00e9tude<\/a><\/span> de Josefina Moraes Arraut et ses coll\u00e8gues de l&rsquo;Institut Br\u00e9silien de Recherche Spatiale a d\u00e9montr\u00e9 que les masses d&rsquo;air se d\u00e9placent \u00e0 travers l&rsquo;Amazonie, soutenues par la pompe biotique, et finissent par se heurter \u00e0 la Cordill\u00e8re des Andes. De l\u00e0, elles virent vers le sud et finalement vers l&rsquo;est en apportant l&rsquo;humidit\u00e9 du bassin de l&rsquo;Amazone au sud-est du Br\u00e9sil et au nord de l&rsquo;Argentine. Par cons\u00e9quent, le maintien de la pompe biotique en Amazonie est essentiel pour assurer l\u2019approvisionnement en eau du sud-est br\u00e9silien.<\/p>\n<h4>QUE DEVRAIENT FAIRE LES POLITIQUES ?<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/deforestation-sparks-brazilian-debate-1417717648\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span lang=\"zxx\"><span lang=\"de-DE\">D<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"zxx\">ans un article paru dans le Journal Wall Street le mois dernier<\/span><\/a>, le gouverneur de S\u00e3o Paulo a exprim\u00e9 son scepticisme quant au r\u00f4le de la d\u00e9forestation en Amazonie dans la s\u00e9cheresse affectant son Etat. Pourtant, la science est claire. Elle d\u00e9passe la simple corr\u00e9lation trouv\u00e9e dans les observations: les m\u00e9canismes de circulation de l&rsquo;eau entre le bassin de l&rsquo;Amazone et les r\u00e9gions du sud-est des Andes sont bien \u00e9tablis.<\/p>\n<p>Avec l\u2019avancement de la d\u00e9forestation dans la r\u00e9gion, les pr\u00e9cipitations dans le sud du Br\u00e9sil continueront \u00e0 \u00eatre affect\u00e9es. La for\u00eat amazonienne va continuer \u00e0 perdre sa capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 r\u00e9guler le climat et \u00e0 assurer un flux d&rsquo;eau vers la partie sud-est du pays. En outre, la d\u00e9forestation en Amazonie br\u00e9silienne affectera le nord de l&rsquo;Argentine, de sorte que le probl\u00e8me prend une dimension internationale.<\/p>\n<p>Les d\u00e9cideurs politiques doivent \u00e9quilibrer les objectifs de d\u00e9veloppement et les pr\u00e9occupations environnementales. Toutefois, dans ce cas il est assez clair que les deux vont main dans la main. Ainsi, il semble y avoir deux options pour r\u00e9agir de fa\u00e7on judicieuse.<\/p>\n<p>D&rsquo;une part, les politiques peuvent d\u00e9cider de lutter contre le probl\u00e8me par sa racine en diminuant la d\u00e9forestation amazonienne et en promouvant la r\u00e9habilitation des for\u00eats d\u00e9grad\u00e9es pour maintenir les r\u00e9gimes de circulation atmosph\u00e9rique. Une deuxi\u00e8me possibilit\u00e9 est d&rsquo;int\u00e9grer les d\u00e9ficits attendus de pr\u00e9cipitations dans toute planification et d\u2019adapter les syst\u00e8mes \u00e9conomiques du sud pour faire face \u00e0 des s\u00e9cheresses plus fr\u00e9quentes. Cela suppose d\u2019am\u00e9liorer le stockage et la distribution de l&rsquo;eau, tout en r\u00e9duisant les volumes d\u2019eau us\u00e9e. Une combinaison de ces deux approches est sans doute l\u00e9gitime.<\/p>\n<p>Il existe une troisi\u00e8me option: ignorer le probl\u00e8me jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 ce qu&rsquo;il s\u2019en aille. Le climat est variable et cette s\u00e9cheresse finira par dispara\u00eetre. He leads the biophysical research at CIFOR and ensures that ecosystem research contributes to all areas of CIFOR\u2019s work. The program also improves capacity and imparts new skills to national partners so that they use these new skills to inform policy processes to ensure policy is built on evidence, knowledge and data. Dr. Verchot\u2019s research focuses on greenhouse gas production in soils and understanding how land use and land-use change affect the atmosphere. This work contributes to assessing the impact of land management decisions and is applied in national greenhouse gas inventories and in measurement and reporting systems for REDD+. Dr. Verchot is a regular contributor to the IPCC Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. He leads the biophysical research at CIFOR and ensures that ecosystem research contributes to all areas of CIFOR\u2019s work. He also leads CIFOR\u2019s climate change team working specifically on mitigation actions like REDD+, climate change adaptation, bioenergy, and low emissions development. This work aims to produce technical improvements and methods for better climate change adaptation and mitigation, and supports equitable development by providing evidence to stakeholders and raises awareness so that the interests of rural land users are considered. The program also improves capacity and imparts new skills to national partners so that they use these new skills to inform policy processes to ensure policy is built on evidence, knowledge and data. Dr. Verchot\u2019s research focuses on greenhouse gas production in soils and understanding how land use and land-use change affect the atmosphere. This work contributes to assessing the impact of land management decisions and is applied in national greenhouse gas inventories and in measurement and reporting systems for REDD+. Dr. Verchot is a regular contributor to the IPCC Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
