Nous avons constat\u00e9 que les obstacles r\u00e9glementaires et le manque d\u2019investissements freinaient le d\u00e9veloppement d\u2019un secteur pourtant tr\u00e8s prometteur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depuis longtemps, les agriculteurs du continent utilisent ces solutions d\u2019origine v\u00e9g\u00e9tale pour prot\u00e9ger les cultures en plein champ ainsi que les denr\u00e9es stock\u00e9es contre les ravageurs, car elles sont abordables, disponibles localement et efficaces. Pourtant, elles sont longtemps rest\u00e9es largement ignor\u00e9es par les d\u00e9cideurs politiques, les investisseurs et les industriels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aujourd\u2019hui, la situation \u00e9volue. Le march\u00e9 africain des biopesticides, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mordorintelligence.com\/industry-reports\/africa-biopesticides-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">actuellement estim\u00e9 \u00e0 195,98 millions de dollars am\u00e9ricains, devrait atteindre 320,3 millions de dollars d\u2019ici 2031<\/a>. Cette croissance est port\u00e9e par une demande croissante d\u2019aliments exempts de pesticides et de produits conformes aux normes strictes relatives aux r\u00e9sidus de pesticides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Malgr\u00e9 cet immense potentiel, de nombreuses esp\u00e8ces d\u2019arbres dont les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s pesticides ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9montr\u00e9es restent sous-exploit\u00e9es. Photo : Axel Fassio \/ Landscape Alliance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parmi les esp\u00e8ces d&rsquo;arbres aux propri\u00e9t\u00e9s pesticides les plus connues, on trouve le neem (<em>Azadirachta indica<\/em>), l\u2019arbre au serpent (<em>Securidaca longepedunculata<\/em>), le zanha \u00e0 fruits velout\u00e9s (<em>Zanha africana<\/em>), le bois de fer (<em>Bobgunnia madagascariensis<\/em>) et le mukau (<em>Melia volkensii<\/em>). Parmi les arbustes ligneux largement utilis\u00e9s, on trouve le haricot-poison (<em>Tephrosia vogelii<\/em>), la verveine sauvage (<em>Lippia javanica<\/em>) et la vernonie commune (<em>Vernonia amygdalina<\/em>). Parmi les esp\u00e8ces non ligneuses dot\u00e9es de propri\u00e9t\u00e9s pesticides, on trouve le pyr\u00e8thre (<em>Tanacetum cinerariifolium<\/em>) et la Tag\u00e8te des d\u00e9combres (<em>Tagetes minuta<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bien avant que le terme \u00ab biopesticide \u00bb ne se g\u00e9n\u00e9ralise, les agriculteurs de toute l\u2019Afrique utilisaient d\u00e9j\u00e0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.landscapealliance.org\/publications\/downloads\/Publications\/PDFS\/B16216.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">nombre de ces esp\u00e8ces<\/a> pour prot\u00e9ger leurs cultures et leurs denr\u00e9es stock\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le neem constitue l\u2019un des exemples les plus aboutis de transformation d\u2019un arbre aux propri\u00e9t\u00e9s pesticides en un produit commercialis\u00e9 \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle. Les compos\u00e9s pr\u00e9sents dans ses graines et ses feuilles perturbent l\u2019alimentation, la croissance et la reproduction des insectes. Ils permettent ainsi de lutter efficacement contre un large \u00e9ventail de ravageurs qui s\u2019attaquent aux c\u00e9r\u00e9ales, aux l\u00e9gumes et aux l\u00e9gumineuses. D\u2019autres esp\u00e8ces d\u2019arbres et d\u2019arbustes ligneux ont \u00e9galement d\u00e9montr\u00e9 leur efficacit\u00e9 contre divers ravageurs des cultures et des produits stock\u00e9s. Ensemble, elles illustrent la richesse des ressources arbor\u00e9es et ligneuses disponibles pour une gestion durable des ravageurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le pyr\u00e8thre offre un autre exemple remarquable. Bien qu\u2019il ne s\u2019agisse pas d\u2019une esp\u00e8ce arbor\u00e9e, il peut \u00eatre int\u00e9gr\u00e9 aux <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forestsnews.org\/fr\/topic\/agroforesterie\">syst\u00e8mes agroforestiers<\/a> et cultiv\u00e9 aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s des arbres dans des paysages agricoles diversifi\u00e9s. Les compos\u00e9s insecticides naturels pr\u00e9sents dans ses fleurs lui ont valu une reconnaissance mondiale et soutiennent une industrie commerciale florissante depuis plus d\u2019un si\u00e8cle. Ils r\u00e9duisent les rendements dans les champs et d\u00e9truisent les c\u00e9r\u00e9ales et les l\u00e9gumineuses entrepos\u00e9es. Cette situation compromet la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 alimentaire, les revenus des agriculteurs ainsi que les efforts visant \u00e0 accro\u00eetre la productivit\u00e9 agricole. Parmi les principaux <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/233414433_Farmers\"_ethno-ecological_knowledge_of_vegetable_pests_and_pesticidal_plant_use_in_Malawi_and_Zambia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">ravageurs des cultures<\/a> figurent les pucerons, les araign\u00e9es rouges et la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S026121940900204X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">fausse-teigne des crucif\u00e8res<\/a>, qui peuvent entra\u00eener d\u2019importantes pertes de rendement et augmenter les co\u00fbts de production en raison des d\u00e9g\u00e2ts qu\u2019ils provoquent et de la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 de r\u00e9p\u00e9ter les traitements phytosanitaires. \u00c0 cela s\u2019ajoutent les <a href=\"https:\/\/www.landscapealliance.org\/publications\/downloads\/Publications\/PDFS\/JA10179.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">ravageurs des denr\u00e9es stock\u00e9es<\/a>, notamment le grand capucin des grains, le petit capucin des grains, les charan\u00e7ons, les bruches et les t\u00e9n\u00e9brions de la farine, qui continuent de menacer les r\u00e9serves alimentaires des m\u00e9nages et les revenus des producteurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depuis longtemps, les agriculteurs r\u00e9pondent \u00e0 ces d\u00e9fis en utilisant des solutions de lutte contre les ravageurs issues des arbres et d\u2019autres esp\u00e8ces v\u00e9g\u00e9tales. Photo : Axel Fassio \/ Landscape Alliance<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Malgr\u00e9 cette longue tradition d\u2019utilisation et une demande croissante du march\u00e9, les biopesticides \u00e0 base d\u2019arbres et d\u2019autres v\u00e9g\u00e9taux restent largement sous-exploit\u00e9s. Leur mise sur le march\u00e9 exige des preuves scientifiques rigoureuses concernant leur efficacit\u00e9, leur innocuit\u00e9, leur toxicit\u00e9, leur persistance et leur dur\u00e9e de conservation. La production de ces donn\u00e9es est co\u00fbteuse et les proc\u00e9dures d\u2019homologation sont souvent complexes, ce qui constitue un obstacle important pour les petites entreprises et les innovateurs de ce secteur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">D\u2019autres d\u00e9fis subsistent, notamment parce que les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s pesticides des plantes peuvent varier en fonction du climat, des conditions du sol et des p\u00e9riodes de r\u00e9colte. Cette variabilit\u00e9 complique la standardisation des produits, le contr\u00f4le de leur qualit\u00e9, leur production \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle ainsi que leur commercialisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Des progr\u00e8s ont n\u00e9anmoins \u00e9t\u00e9 accomplis. Dans plusieurs pays africains, les <a href=\"https:\/\/standardsfacility.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2025-05\/pg_694_end_of_project_assessment_na_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">cadres r\u00e9glementaires<\/a> sont pass\u00e9s de syst\u00e8mes restrictifs \u00e0 des approches plus favorables et davantage harmonis\u00e9es. Parall\u00e8lement, les conditions du march\u00e9 deviennent de plus en plus propices au d\u00e9veloppement des pesticides botaniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les exportateurs sont d\u00e9sormais de plus en plus tenus de respecter des limites strictes concernant les r\u00e9sidus de pesticides, en particulier pour les produits destin\u00e9s aux march\u00e9s europ\u00e9ens tels que le caf\u00e9, le cacao et les produits frais. Dans le m\u00eame temps, la demande mondiale \u2014 y compris en Afrique \u2014 pour des aliments issus de l\u2019agriculture biologique ne cesse de cro\u00eetre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pris ensemble, ces facteurs montrent que les conditions sont aujourd\u2019hui bien plus favorables \u00e0 une adoption \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle des biopesticides qu\u2019elles ne l\u2019\u00e9taient il y a dix ans. Mieux valoriser ces ressources locales pourrait contribuer \u00e0 r\u00e9duire les pertes agricoles, \u00e0 accro\u00eetre les revenus des petits exploitants, \u00e0 cr\u00e9er des emplois verts et \u00e0 promouvoir une intensification durable de l\u2019agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pour exploiter pleinement le potentiel de ce secteur, il sera n\u00e9cessaire de poursuivre les investissements dans la recherche et le d\u00e9veloppement de produits, de renforcer les cha\u00eenes de valeur reliant les producteurs aux march\u00e9s, d\u2019investir dans les capacit\u00e9s de transformation et de fabrication, et de mettre en place des politiques favorisant l\u2019innovation tout en garantissant des normes \u00e9lev\u00e9es de qualit\u00e9 et de s\u00e9curit\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le continent dispose d\u00e9j\u00e0 de nombreux atouts pour devenir un leader mondial des biopesticides d\u2019origine v\u00e9g\u00e9tale : une biodiversit\u00e9 exceptionnelle, un vaste patrimoine de savoirs traditionnels, une expertise scientifique en pleine expansion et des march\u00e9s de plus en plus demandeurs de produits agricoles durables.
