Aunque la riqueza de especies puede ser menor que en las selvas h\u00famedas, los bosques secos tropicales son h\u00e1bitat cr\u00edtico para la megafauna amenazada, incluidos jaguares, l\u00e9mures, jirafas, zorrillos pigmeos y dragones de Komodo. M\u00e1s a\u00fan, son verdaderos <em>hotspots<\/em> de biodiversidad. Un estudio exhaustivo en Am\u00e9rica revel\u00f3 cerca de 7000 especies de \u00e1rboles y arbustos, con tasas de endemismo que alcanzan un asombroso <a href=\"https:\/\/environment-review.yale.edu\/case-conserving-tropical-dry-forests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">73 % en los bosques secos de M\u00e9xico<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>La destrucci\u00f3n de estos bosques no significa solo la p\u00e9rdida de \u00e1rboles, sino la extinci\u00f3n definitiva de un patrimonio evolutivo irreemplazable. Pero las mismas adaptaciones que permiten a estos ecosistemas prosperar en un clima duramente predecible se han convertido en vulnerabilidades frente a los cambios antropog\u00e9nicos. Sus mecanismos finamente ajustados, desde la ca\u00edda de hojas hasta la floraci\u00f3n sincronizada, dependen de se\u00f1ales estacionales confiables. El cambio clim\u00e1tico est\u00e1 alterando estas se\u00f1ales, generando precipitaciones irregulares y estaciones secas m\u00e1s largas e intensas. Cientos de millones de personas, a menudo entre las comunidades m\u00e1s pobres del mundo, dependen directamente de estos bosques. Para muchos, son la \u00fanica barrera entre la subsistencia y la pobreza extrema.<\/p>\n<p>Los bosques secos tropicales act\u00faan como proveedores naturales, ofreciendo bienes esenciales que sostienen a los hogares y las econom\u00edas locales:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Seguridad alimentaria:<\/strong> en regiones donde la agricultura es precaria, estos bosques brindan seguridad alimentaria. Frutas silvestres, nueces, vegetales, insectos comestibles y carne de monte complementan las dietas y sirven de red de seguridad durante las p\u00e9rdidas de cosecha.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Energ\u00eda:<\/strong> para 2400 millones de personas en pa\u00edses en desarrollo, la le\u00f1a es la principal fuente de combustible para cocinar. En muchas regiones de bosques secos del \u00c1frica subsahariana, la le\u00f1a representa hasta el 75 % de la energ\u00eda consumida.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ingresos:<\/strong> productos forestales no maderables como miel, cera de abejas, plantas medicinales, gomas y resinas generan oportunidades econ\u00f3micas. En Burkina Faso, la manteca de karit\u00e9 que proveniente de los bosques secos es la tercera exportaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s importante del pa\u00eds; en Etiop\u00eda, las gomas y resinas solo son superadas por el ganado en importancia para la econom\u00eda rural.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Quiz\u00e1s el rol m\u00e1s vital de los bosques secos tropicales es su funci\u00f3n como red de seguridad. Durante sequ\u00edas, inundaciones o conflictos, los bosques proveen recursos de respaldo que evitan que los hogares caigan en la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cifor-icraf.org\/knowledge\/publication\/5690\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">pobreza extrema<\/a>. Las familias m\u00e1s pobres dependen desproporcionadamente de estos recursos, y las mujeres, en particular, se apoyan en el comercio de productos no maderables para generar ingresos en tiempos de crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Sin embargo, esta dependencia puede volverse destructiva. Regulan los ciclos del agua, polinizan cultivos, reciclan nutrientes y mejoran los suelos, apoyando directamente la agricultura circundante. Solo los bosques de Miombo se estima que sustentan los medios de vida de m\u00e1s de 100 millones de personas.<\/p>\n<p>Tambi\u00e9n desempe\u00f1an un papel subestimado en el ciclo global del carbono. Aunque almacenan menos carbono por hect\u00e1rea que los bosques tropicales h\u00famedos, su vasta extensi\u00f3n los convierte en grandes reservorios. Sin embargo, los inventarios siguen siendo incompletos y muchas veces desactualizados, lo que oculta su verdadero potencial de mitigaci\u00f3n.
