Este efecto de sombra directa es particularmente significativo para mitigar los efectos de islas de calor en las zonas urbanas, donde las ciudades suelen experimentar temperaturas de 1 a 3 \u00b0C m\u00e1s altas que las zonas rurales circundantes.<\/p>\n<p>La evapotranspiraci\u00f3n, el proceso mediante el cual el agua se evapora de las hojas y el suelo circundante, tambi\u00e9n contribuye al enfriamiento del ambiente. A medida que el agua cambia de l\u00edquido a vapor, absorbe calor del aire circundante, reduciendo las temperaturas locales. Un \u00e1rbol maduro puede transpirar hasta 400 litros de agua diariamente, creando un efecto de aire acondicionado natural. Este proceso absorbe grandes cantidades de energ\u00eda t\u00e9rmica, con estudios que muestran que un solo \u00e1rbol grande puede proporcionar el mismo efecto de enfriamiento equivalente al de 10 aires acondicionados funcionando durante 20 horas al d\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p>El efecto albedo de los bosques tambi\u00e9n juega un papel vital, aunque complejo, en la regulaci\u00f3n de la temperatura. Los bosques tropicales y templados tienen un bajo albedo en comparaci\u00f3n con otras coberturas terrestres, lo que significa que absorben m\u00e1s radiaci\u00f3n solar y contribuyen al enfriamiento ambiental. Los bosques boreales, con sus doseles m\u00e1s oscuros, presentan un caso \u00fanico donde la deforestaci\u00f3n podr\u00eda llevar al enfriamiento debido a fuertes efectos de albedo en la superficie. Los bosques tropicales por s\u00ed solos almacenan alrededor de 250 mil millones de toneladas de carbono en su biomasa. La capacidad de los bosques para secuestrar carbono var\u00eda seg\u00fan su edad y tipo, con bosques tropicales maduros absorbiendo aproximadamente 2.4 toneladas de carbono por hect\u00e1rea al a\u00f1o.<\/p>\n<p>Desafortunadamente, la deforestaci\u00f3n y el cambio clim\u00e1tico amenazan cada vez m\u00e1s los efectos reguladores de temperatura de los bosques. La p\u00e9rdida forestal global no solo reduce estos beneficios de regulaci\u00f3n de temperatura, sino que puede crear un ciclo de retroalimentaci\u00f3n donde temperaturas m\u00e1s altas generan mayor estr\u00e9s y mortalidad en los bosques, convirtiendo potencialmente algunos de ellos de sumideros a fuentes de carbono.<\/p>\n<div class='short-quote'>\n\t\t\t<blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t<p><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<footer>\n\t\t\t\t\t<cite title='Source Title'><\/cite>\n\t\t\t\t<\/footer>\n\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>El impacto de la deforestaci\u00f3n en las temperaturas globales ha sido severo y bien documentado. Entre 2000 y 2023, el mundo perdi\u00f3 m\u00e1s de 130 millones de hect\u00e1reas de bosques tropicales. Esta p\u00e9rdida devastadora ha contribuido significativamente al aumento de las temperaturas globales, con \u00e1reas deforestadas mostrando aumentos de temperatura de hasta 4 \u00b0C (y tambi\u00e9n reducci\u00f3n de las precipitaciones&#8230; aunque esa es otra historia) en comparaci\u00f3n con regiones boscosas cercanas.<\/p>\n<p>A medida que las temperaturas aumentan, muchos bosques enfrentan un mayor estr\u00e9s debido a las sequ\u00edas y los incendios frecuentes, lo que podr\u00eda convertirlos de sumideros a fuentes de carbono. Por ejemplo, los incendios forestales de Australia en 2019-2020 liberaron aproximadamente 830 millones de toneladas de CO2, demostrando c\u00f3mo el cambio clim\u00e1tico puede desencadenar devastadores ciclos de retroalimentaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<div class='short-link'>\n\t\t\t<a class='GTMshortLink' href='https:\/\/www.forestsnews.org\/24311\/on-forests-role-in-climate-new-york-times-op-ed-gets-it-wrong?fnl=' target='_blank'>\n\t\t\t\t<span class='short-link__box'><span>Read also<\/span><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<span class='short-link__desc'>On forests\u2019 role in climate, New York Times op-ed gets it wrong<\/span>\n\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>En ese sentido, la ciencia es clara: los bosques y los \u00e1rboles representan una de nuestras herramientas naturales m\u00e1s poderosas para regular las temperaturas globales y mitigar los impactos del cambio clim\u00e1tico.<\/p>\n<p>Por ello, se necesita acci\u00f3n urgente en m\u00faltiples frentes:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Proteger los bosques intactos o casi intactos que quedan.<\/li>\n<li>Promover iniciativas s\u00f3lidas de reforestaci\u00f3n y forestaci\u00f3n.<\/li>\n<li>Implementar pr\u00e1cticas sostenibles de gesti\u00f3n forestal.<\/li>\n<li>Integrar la protecci\u00f3n y restauraci\u00f3n de los bosques en las pol\u00edticas clim\u00e1ticas.<\/li>\n<li>Apoyar a las comunidades ind\u00edgenas como guardianes de las tierras.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>La cobertura forestal global ha disminuido de manera constante desde el a\u00f1o 2000, con la p\u00e9rdida de bosques primarios particularmente aguda en las regiones tropicales. Si bien algunos pa\u00edses han avanzado en esfuerzos de reforestaci\u00f3n, la p\u00e9rdida neta de bosques primarios contin\u00faa a un ritmo alarmante de aproximadamente 3.8 millones de hect\u00e1reas anuales. Esta p\u00e9rdida est\u00e1 fuertemente correlacionada con el aumento acelerado de las temperaturas globales, contribuyendo a la superaci\u00f3n del umbral de 1.5 \u00b0C en 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Mientras nos preparamos a celebrar el D\u00eda Internacional de los Bosques, la confirmaci\u00f3n de que hemos cruzado umbral de 1.5 \u00b0C en 2024 debe servir como un recordatorio contundente de que tenemos que actuar con decisi\u00f3n para proteger y expandir nuestros recursos forestales.
