Sin embargo, para recolectar el fruto, los miembros de las comunidades que realizan esta actividad generalmente talan las palmeras y, con el tiempo, el ecosistema se degrada y eventualmente se convierte en una fuente neta de emisiones.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:-20,&quot;335559737&quot;:-20,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Las emisiones combinadas de la vegetaci\u00f3n y la turba [hasta seis toneladas de carbono por hect\u00e1rea al a\u00f1o (6 t C ha-1 a-1) en un pantano moderadamente degradado, e incluso m\u00e1s en un sitio altamente degradado] fueron dos veces m\u00e1s altas de lo esperado por Hergoualc&#8217;h y sus colegas, lo cual marca una gran diferencia para la contabilidad de carbono del pa\u00eds. A diferencia del sudeste asi\u00e1tico, donde las turberas se drenan para la agricultura, en la Amazon\u00eda peruana la degradaci\u00f3n es m\u00e1s gradual. El estudio que dirigi\u00f3, en un pantano de palmeras de 500 hect\u00e1reas en las afueras de Iquitos, la ciudad amaz\u00f3nica m\u00e1s grande de Per\u00fa, ayud\u00f3 a los cient\u00edficos a comprender tanto esos flujos naturales como el impacto de la cosecha de frutos.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:-20,&quot;335559737&quot;:-20,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Los investigadores compararon un pantano intacto dentro de un \u00e1rea protegida con dos \u00e1reas de caser\u00edos (centros poblados) cercanos. Una de esas \u00e1reas hab\u00eda sido fuertemente degradada por la recolecci\u00f3n de frutos de palma y la otra estaba moderadamente degradada.
