El concepto de servicios ecosist\u00e9micos ha ido ganando relevancia en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os por ser de utilidad para comprender los m\u00faltiples beneficios sociales que ofrece la naturaleza<\/a>. Una de sus ventajas es que permite tener una mirada integral de la sociedad y la naturaleza. Este concepto, no s\u00f3lo presta atenci\u00f3n a la forma en c\u00f3mo los ecosistemas generan beneficios sociales y qu\u00e9 tipo de funciones ecol\u00f3gicas lo permiten, sino que tambi\u00e9n pone \u00e9nfasis en la forma en c\u00f3mo la poblaci\u00f3n aprovecha estos beneficios y las reglas de juego que se establecen para poder gestionarlos. Esta caracter\u00edstica permite que los investigadores y los responsables de la toma de decisiones encuentren oportunidades para el di\u00e1logo, intercambio y acuerdos en base a conocimiento y pr\u00e1ctica. .<\/p>\n

Pero \u00bfc\u00f3mo y por qu\u00e9 se debe acortar la brecha entre ciencia y pol\u00edtica en temas de servicios ecosist\u00e9micos? Destacamos 5 ventajas que favorecen a la sociedad al lograr integrar la pol\u00edtica y la investigaci\u00f3n en esta arena.<\/p>\n

  1. Reconocer el valor de la naturaleza para el bienestar humano<\/u><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Debido a que la investigaci\u00f3n en servicios ecosist\u00e9micos permite identificar beneficios sociales y no son investigaciones exclusivamente sobre las ciencias naturales, permite que los responsables de la tomado de decisiones comprendan el valor y el impacto que tienen los ecosistemas en la calidad de vida de las personas. Esto es un paso importante pues posiciona a la naturaleza como un elemento indispensable en la discusi\u00f3n sobre c\u00f3mo mejorar la situaci\u00f3n de la sociedad en general, un tema central al momento de discutir pol\u00edticas p\u00fablicas.<\/p>\n

    1. Facilitar el camino hacia la sostenibilidad<\/u><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Evidenciar el valor de la naturaleza en la vida de las personas ante los responsables de la toma de decisiones facilita que se destaque la necesidad de promover un desarrollo social y econ\u00f3mico que no afecte de manera negativa a los ecosistemas. Ello contribuye de sobremanera al cumplimiento de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible de las Naciones Unidas, objetivos a los cuales el Centro para la Investigaci\u00f3n Forestal Internacional (CIFOR) busca contribuir desde su rol de investigaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

      1. Prevenir o alertar sobre conflictos sociales<\/u><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Identificando qui\u00e9nes son, c\u00f3mo se relacionan y d\u00f3nde se ubican las personas que se benefician de la naturaleza permite saber lo que pasar\u00eda si es que algunos ecosistemas se vieran afectados, o el impacto que tendr\u00eda el favorecer alg\u00fan servicio sobre otros. Por ejemplo, investigaciones del CIFOR en Costa Rica<\/a> y en Per\u00fa<\/a> han generado informaci\u00f3n sobre c\u00f3mo cambios en el manejo de un territorio afecta diferentes servicios ecosist\u00e9micos y c\u00f3mo las relaciones de poder entre los actores del manejo de los ecosistemas son una barrera para alcanzar la equidad en la distribuci\u00f3n de beneficios.<\/p>\n\n

        1. Fortalecer la participaci\u00f3n de la sociedad<\/u><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Debido a que el enfoque de servicios ecosist\u00e9micos analiza la forma en que las personas se benefician, resalta la importancia de la participaci\u00f3n para el dise\u00f1o de pol\u00edticas p\u00fablicas, adem\u00e1s de permitir identificar urgencias, prioridades pol\u00edticas y vac\u00edos de informaci\u00f3n para la agenda de investigaci\u00f3n. M\u00e1s personas participando de la vida p\u00fablica y m\u00e1s investigaciones generando informaci\u00f3n oportuna contribuyen directamente a la mejor toma de decisiones por parte de autoridades y pol\u00edticos.<\/p>\n

          1. Integrar valores sociales en la toma de decisiones<\/u><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Debido a que los beneficios de la naturaleza pueden ser tangibles e intangibles, su consideraci\u00f3n permite el ingreso de valores sociales y culturales que van m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la sola preocupaci\u00f3n por la satisfacci\u00f3n de necesidades b\u00e1sicas. Esto permite dar a conocer las diferentes formas de entender la naturaleza por diferentes grupos humanos, como las comunidades campesinas o los pueblos ind\u00edgenas. As\u00ed, se resalta su importancia y posicionan estos valores y su relevancia al momento de dise\u00f1ar pol\u00edticas p\u00fablicas.<\/p>\n

            No todas las personas valoran la naturaleza de la misma manera. Al acercar a la ciencia y la pol\u00edtica desde esa mirada, las poblaciones se sienten m\u00e1s part\u00edcipes y valiosas para el proceso de toma de decisiones, lo que al final genera puentes entre diversos sistemas y enfoques de conocimiento sobre la naturaleza.<\/p>\n
