Durante a\u00f1os hemos celebrado los bosques, hemos alabado sus atributos y enumerado sus numerosas virtudes. Ahora, en el D\u00eda Internacional de los Bosques, las cosas no son diferentes. Es un d\u00eda para titulares y para celebraciones. Sin embargo, las realidades de la deforestaci\u00f3n y la degradaci\u00f3n continuar\u00e1n hoy, y tambi\u00e9n ma\u00f1ana.<\/p>\n

Si atesoramos nuestros bosques tanto como decimos, es hora de considerar un enfoque diferente para protegerlos. Primero, y esto puede sonar contraintuitivo, debemos comenzar por las ciudades del mundo.<\/p>\n

Considere esto: entre 1960 y 2015, la poblaci\u00f3n mundial aument\u00f3 m\u00e1s del doble, a 7.500 millones de personas. En el lapso de poco m\u00e1s de una generaci\u00f3n, la poblaci\u00f3n global se dispar\u00f3 y nos convertimos en un planeta de habitantes urbanos. Por primera vez, m\u00e1s de la mitad de nosotros vivimos hoy en ciudades.<\/p>\n

Este crecimiento urbano explosivo ha eclipsado un incremento absoluto tambi\u00e9n en la poblaci\u00f3n rural. Lo peor de todo es que ambos han contribuido a generar presiones enormes sobre los bosques mundiales y los paisajes naturales en general. El mundo contin\u00faa perdiendo bosques tropicales a un ritmo alarmante, y la degradaci\u00f3n, el proceso de disminuci\u00f3n de las funciones biol\u00f3gicas de los bosques, representa alrededor de una cuarta parte de las emisiones de carbono asociadas con los bosques tropicales.<\/p>\n

A medida que los migrantes se mudan a las ciudades, cambian sus estilos de vida y patrones de consumo. Los habitantes de las ciudades consumen m\u00e1s alimentos procesados y de base animal, y consumen m\u00e1s energ\u00eda. Esos gustos cambiantes aumentan la necesidad de tierras agr\u00edcolas para la crianza de animales y el cultivo de los productos que los alimentan. Al mismo tiempo, la creciente demanda de vivienda empuja los l\u00edmites de las ciudades hacia bosques vecinos y tierras de cultivo.<\/p>\n\n

Seg\u00fan algunas estimaciones, la expansi\u00f3n urbana provocar\u00e1 una p\u00e9rdida de hasta el 2,4 por ciento de las tierras de cultivo en el mundo para el a\u00f1o 2030, y Asia y \u00c1frica ser\u00e1n los m\u00e1s perjudicados. Estos cambios a menudo son significativos y modifican los h\u00e1bitats y la cobertura terrestre, as\u00ed como la hidrolog\u00eda y la biogeoqu\u00edmica.<\/p>\n

Los niveles crecientes de desigualdad y la inseguridad laboral y alimentaria en las ciudades de todo el mundo se traduce en que los nuevos migrantes urbanos a menudo siguen dependiendo de los recursos de los bosques tanto dentro de las ciudades como en la periferia urbana, lo que fomenta la degradaci\u00f3n acelerada, la deforestaci\u00f3n y la p\u00e9rdida de biodiversidad, a medida que se adecuan a un estilo de vida basado en el dinero en efectivo.<\/p>\n

La forma en que actualmente abordamos la deforestaci\u00f3n no est\u00e1 funcionando. En el Centro para la Investigaci\u00f3n Forestal Internacional<\/a> (CIFOR) estamos tratando de revertir la pr\u00e1ctica de proteger los bosques de manera aislada, y m\u00e1s bien tomar en cuenta c\u00f3mo las ciudades, las tierras agr\u00edcolas y los bosques se conectan. Lo mismo ocurre con una amplia gama de otros desaf\u00edos ambientales que incluyen la construcci\u00f3n de ciudades sostenibles y la gesti\u00f3n de cuencas hidrogr\u00e1ficas, e incluso el cambio clim\u00e1tico.<\/p>\n

Entonces, \u00bfcu\u00e1l es la soluci\u00f3n si queremos proteger los bosques a la par que nos adaptamos a este hist\u00f3rico desplazamiento del campo a las ciudades?<\/p>\n

La soluci\u00f3n es pensar en estos problemas de manera integral y usar el llamado enfoque de paisaje. La buena noticia es que ya hemos comenzado a sentar las bases para ello.<\/p>\n

El enfoque de paisaje incluye dimensiones sociales, pol\u00edticas y econ\u00f3micas, as\u00ed como ecol\u00f3gicas y f\u00edsicas. No es un modelo \u00fanico que calza a todos: cada paisaje tiene sus propios desaf\u00edos y oportunidades que requieren un conjunto de herramientas a la medida y que abordan las diversas preocupaciones sobre el uso de la tierra de las m\u00faltiples partes interesadas. Como dijo uno de mis colegas, se trata de ir abri\u00e9ndose paso \u2014aunque con un prop\u00f3sito\u2014 y ser lo suficientemente flexibles como para adaptarse al cambio.<\/p>\n

El enfoque de paisaje busca abordar lo complejo del desaf\u00edo que el mundo enfrenta, ya sea en lo que respecta a la protecci\u00f3n de los bosques, el cambio clim\u00e1tico o la agricultura sostenible. Es de naturaleza multidisciplinaria y, por definici\u00f3n, busca contar con una multiplicidad de voces. Requiere tanto escuchar como actuar.<\/p>\n

Esfuerzos como el Desaf\u00edo de Bonn<\/a> para la restauraci\u00f3n de millones de hect\u00e1reas de tierras forestales y el movimiento Global Landscapes Forum<\/a> est\u00e1n creando impulso para equilibrar las necesidades de la conservaci\u00f3n, la agricultura, las industrias vinculadas a los recursos y otros usos de la tierra. Debido a que los paisajes son sistemas completos, toman en cuenta la diversidad de tipos y usos de la tierra, desde las ciudades hasta las \u00e1reas naturales, as\u00ed como a las cadenas de valor.<\/p>\n

Tambi\u00e9n debemos valorar los espacios verdes dentro del paisaje urbano, tomando en cuenta el papel beneficioso que desempe\u00f1an en la mejora de las vidas de los habitantes de las ciudades. Los bosques urbanos filtran los contaminantes, reducen la contaminaci\u00f3n ac\u00fastica, disminuyen la dependencia del aire acondicionado, ayudan a proteger las cuencas hidrogr\u00e1ficas y mucho m\u00e1s.<\/p>\n

Tenemos un largo camino por recorrer. El mundo ha hecho muchas promesas: reducir la deforestaci\u00f3n, frenar las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero y limitar el cambio clim\u00e1tico, restaurar los paisajes y proteger los oc\u00e9anos, y todo esto no ser\u00e1 f\u00e1cil.<\/p>\n

Es hora de que empecemos a cuidar los bosques con m\u00e1s que simples palabras al viento.
