Anteriormente, tuvo a su cargo el \u00e1rea de Asuntos Internacionales del <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenbeltmovement.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Green Belt Movement (GBM)<\/a> (Movimiento Cintur\u00f3n Verde), fundado por su madre, Wangari Maathai (1940-2011), galardonada con el Premio Nobel de la Paz.<\/p>\n<p>Durante el <a href=\"http:\/\/www.landscapes.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Global Landscapes Forum<\/a>, desarrollado en noviembre pasado en Marrakech, Mathai convers\u00f3 con Forest News del Centro para la Investigaci\u00f3n Forestal Internacional (CIFOR) sobre el g\u00e9nero y el cambio clim\u00e1tico, y sobre la necesidad de empoderar a las mujeres para alcanzar los objetivos establecidos en el Acuerdo de Par\u00eds.<\/p>\n<p>Como copresidenta del <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wri.org\/our-work\/project\/global-restoration-initiative\/global-restoration-council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Global Restoration Council<\/a> (Consejo para la Restauraci\u00f3n Mundial), Mathai tambi\u00e9n se refiri\u00f3 a la importancia de la restauraci\u00f3n de los paisajes y por qu\u00e9 esto es  crucial para alcanzar los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS).<\/p>\n<div class='short-quote'>\n\t\t\t<blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t<p><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<footer>\n\t\t\t\t\t<cite title='Source Title'><\/cite>\n\t\t\t\t<\/footer>\n\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00bfSe est\u00e1 haciendo lo suficiente para incluir a las mujeres en las recientes conversaciones sobre el clima?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Es un proceso lento. Hemos visto que ya no se discute si la agenda de g\u00e9nero debe estar en el centro de la cuesti\u00f3n, sino m\u00e1s bien <em>c\u00f3mo<\/em> y <em>qu\u00e9<\/em> necesitamos para llevarla al siguiente nivel. As\u00ed que hemos tenido \u00e9xito en algunos aspectos, pero por lo dem\u00e1s sigue siendo un proceso bastante lento.<\/p>\n<div class='short-image short-image--left'>\n\t\t\t\t<a class='fancybox-image GTMshortImage' href='' target='_self'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='short-image__thumb'>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img src='' width='260'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='short-image__type'><h3><\/h3><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='short-image__title'><h4><\/h4><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>Durante las negociaciones, hicimos demandas claras sobre la participaci\u00f3n de las mujeres y nos alegra ver algunos resultados del Acuerdo de Par\u00eds. Pero a\u00fan tenemos un largo camino por recorrer.<\/p>\n<p>Actualmente estamos pasando a la acci\u00f3n, y parte de ello es el proceso de contribuciones determinadas a nivel nacional (NDC, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s) y de comprometer a las mujeres a ese nivel, a nivel nacional; e igualmente importante es asegurar que las mujeres se involucren en las soluciones dirigidas a cumplir las aspiraciones de nuestras NDC. Mantener a las mujeres energizadas y comprometidas es el pr\u00f3ximo gran objetivo.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u00bfCu\u00e1l es su enfoque para lograr que las mujeres se entusiasmen con este tema a trav\u00e9s de su trabajo?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Para nosotros, lo m\u00e1s importante es la evidencia. Es necesario contar con suficiente evidencia s\u00f3lida que justifique la importancia del compromiso de las mujeres.<\/p>\n<p>Las mujeres no quieren caridad. Las mujeres quieren involucrarse porque ello tiene sentido para el logro de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible, y porque tiene sentido para sus negocios. Queremos asegurarnos de contar con evidencia s\u00f3lida que justifique la importancia del compromiso de las mujeres.<\/p>\n<p>Y luego, por supuesto, est\u00e1 el tema del valor del compromiso de las mujeres. No se trata simplemente un bonito gesto. Por ello queremos asegurarnos de tener la evidencia disponible. Es un pilar importante del eje de actividad de wPOWER.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hablemos de la restauraci\u00f3n del paisaje. En su opini\u00f3n, \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 ha recibido tanta atenci\u00f3n y por qu\u00e9 es importante?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pienso que la restauraci\u00f3n del paisaje es, en muchos sentidos, la principal respuesta a los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible. Esta aborda directamente cuatro ODS, pero creo que en un sentido m\u00e1s amplio tiene m\u00faltiples conexiones con casi todos ellos. Abordar la integridad de nuestros paisajes es abordar la seguridad alimentaria; es abordar la seguridad h\u00eddrica y la seguridad energ\u00e9tica, y, con ello, la igualdad de la mujer.<\/p>\n<div class='short-image short-image--left'>\n\t\t\t\t<a class='fancybox-image GTMshortImage' href='' target='_self'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='short-image__thumb'>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img src='' width='260'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='short-image__type'><h3><\/h3><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='short-image__title'><h4><\/h4><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>La integridad de nuestros paisajes tiene que ver con c\u00f3mo mantenemos la vida como la conocemos. Sabemos que el agua y sistemas como la polinizaci\u00f3n y otros que dependen de la existencia de paisajes saludables se encuentran amenazados.<\/p>\n<p>Pienso que la restauraci\u00f3n del paisaje se est\u00e1 convirtiendo r\u00e1pidamente en una forma de lograr la acci\u00f3n clim\u00e1tica a gran escala. De lo que se trata es de aumentar la escala.<\/p>\n<p>Por ejemplo, est\u00e1 la <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wri.org\/our-work\/project\/AFR100\/about-afr100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Iniciativa para la Restauraci\u00f3n del Paisaje Forestal Africano<\/a> (AFR100, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s), puesta en marcha junto con la <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nepad.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Nueva Alianza para el Desarrollo de \u00c1frica<\/a> (NEPAD Agency), el <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wri.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Instituto de Recursos Mundiales<\/a> (WRI, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s) y la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Uni\u00f3n Internacional para la Conservaci\u00f3n de la Naturaleza<\/a> (UICN).<\/p>\n<p>Se trata de una ambiciosa iniciativa africana que busca restaurar 100 millones de hect\u00e1reas para el a\u00f1o 2030. Esto no ocurrir\u00e1 por medio de iniciativas aisladas. Ser\u00e1 un trabajo a escala del paisaje, un mosaico de restauraci\u00f3n que involucre a todos los paisajes productivos: r\u00edos, monta\u00f1as, bosques aut\u00f3ctonos y plantaciones comerciales; y que esencialmente garantice la integridad del paisaje.<\/p>\n<div class='short-quote'>\n\t\t\t<blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t<p><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<footer>\n\t\t\t\t\t<cite title='Source Title'><\/cite>\n\t\t\t\t<\/footer>\n\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t<\/div>\n<p>Lo mismo est\u00e1 ocurriendo en Am\u00e9rica Latina. Existen ambiciosos objetivos globales como la <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wri.org\/our-work\/project\/initiative-20x20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Iniciativa 20\u00d720<\/a>, que busca responder al Desaf\u00edo de Bonn (150 millones de hect\u00e1reas para el a\u00f1o 2020), y, por supuesto, la <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/climatechange\/summit\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/07\/New-York-Declaration-on-Forest-%E2%80%93-Action-Statement-and-Action-Plan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Declaraci\u00f3n de Nueva York sobre los Bosques<\/a>, cuya misi\u00f3n es [lograr la restauraci\u00f3n de] 350 millones de hect\u00e1reas para el a\u00f1o 2030.<\/p>\n<p>As\u00ed pues, tenemos objetivos claros y ambiciosos y debemos comenzar a abordarlos en detalle. Ahora que se est\u00e1 empezando a poner en pr\u00e1ctica las NDC, debemos preguntarnos c\u00f3mo estos objetivos encajan en nuestras prioridades nacionales.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00bfQu\u00e9 ha observado en t\u00e9rminos de la implementaci\u00f3n y de traducir esto en acciones sobre el tereno?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Obviamente estoy esperanzada por mi pa\u00eds natal, Kenia, que es probablemente uno de los primeros de aquellos que se comprometieron con la AFR100 en presentar un plan de acci\u00f3n muy claro, el cual fue publicado hace un mes.<\/p>\n<div class='short-image short-image--left'>\n\t\t\t\t<a class='fancybox-image GTMshortImage' href='' target='_self'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='short-image__thumb'>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img src='' width='260'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='short-image__type'><h3><\/h3><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='short-image__title'><h4><\/h4><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>El plan nacional de restauraci\u00f3n del paisaje de Kenia muestra muy claramente c\u00f3mo este pa\u00eds va a lograr su meta de 5 millones de hect\u00e1reas.<\/p>\n<p>Y este es el tipo de compromiso que necesitamos para comenzar a pasar a un nivel de mayor detalle. \u00bfD\u00f3nde se ubican esas 5 millones de hect\u00e1reas? \u00bfQu\u00e9 apariencia tienen? Si son pastizales, prados, v\u00edas fluviales, bosques, plantaciones comerciales, todo el mosaico de sistemas agroforestales del paisaje. Ha llegado la hora de la verdad.<\/p>\n<p>Y luego, por supuesto, tenemos que ver c\u00f3mo lograrlo. Se requiere colaboraci\u00f3n interministerial, y ciertamente recursos.
