Por motivos sanitarios, hemos restringido los viajes y el trabajo de campo en los pa\u00edses afectados. En el caso del <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cgiar.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">CGIAR<\/a>, consorcio que agrupa a 15 centros de investigaci\u00f3n y al que pertenece CIFOR, nos hemos visto obligados a posponer o trasladar a otras regiones varias reuniones internacionales que iban a realizarse en la zona. Los brotes de \u00e9bola constituyen grandes cat\u00e1strofes para la humanidad, y todos debemos actuar de manera cuidadosa y responsable: y contribuir a trav\u00e9s de todos los medios posibles en la b\u00fasqueda de soluciones. Como una organizaci\u00f3n de investigaci\u00f3n forestal, tambi\u00e9n seguimos atentamente los renovados y urgentes pedidos de una investigaci\u00f3n acerca de los v\u00ednculos entre el virus del \u00e9bola y las actividades relacionadas con los bosques.<\/p>\n<p>Algunas preguntas inmediatas son las siguientes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00bfSabemos realmente c\u00f3mo se producen los brotes de \u00e9bola?<\/li>\n<li>\u00bfPodemos proporcionar evidencia que permita informar de manera adecuada a las pol\u00edticas para prevenir tragedias en el futuro?<\/li>\n<li>\u00bfTenemos la capacidad de equiparar las actuales oleadas de noticias y \u201clas sugerencias de expertos\u201d con hallazgos cient\u00edficos?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lamentablemente, la respuesta a cada una de estas preguntas es en gran medida \u201cno\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Se ha establecido claramente que el virus del \u00e9bola tiene un vinculo con los sistemas forestales y en \u00c1frica Central y Occidental. Adem\u00e1s, todo parece indicar que contamos con conocimiento cient\u00edfico relativamente bueno acerca de los problemas m\u00e9dicos y cl\u00ednicos existentes, aunque la aplicaci\u00f3n poco eficaz de este conocimiento ha permitido que la enfermedad se propague de manera r\u00e1pida y amplia y cause terrible sufrimiento.<\/p>\n<p>Sin embargo, desde la perspectiva de la forester\u00eda y la gesti\u00f3n de los paisajes, carecemos de informaci\u00f3n suficiente acerca de c\u00f3mo y d\u00f3nde aparece el virus, y tambi\u00e9n sobre los riesgos vinculados a las pr\u00e1cticas agr\u00edcolas o las cadenas de valor de la carne de caza.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bfQu\u00e9 nuevas investigaciones forestales y sobre los paisajes demandan los brotes de \u00e9bola? En el corto plazo, es necesario realizar revisiones sistem\u00e1ticas y transparentes (v\u00e9ase <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.cifor.org\/ebf\/home.html?_ga=1.216679894.130315623.1409802571\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">evidency-based forestry<\/a> de CIFOR) para dejar en claro la posici\u00f3n del conocimiento cient\u00edfico en relaci\u00f3n con cuestiones de pol\u00edtica relevantes para el manejo forestal y la agricultura en la regi\u00f3n afectada. CIFOR y sus socios trabajan actualmente con este prop\u00f3sito. Fotograf\u00eda de Ollivier Girard \/ CIFOR.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>En un horizonte m\u00e1s lejano, la investigaci\u00f3n debe poner las cosas en perspectiva y colocar los brotes de \u00e9bola en un contexto m\u00e1s amplio de gesti\u00f3n de riesgos. El \u00e9bola ha estado entre nosotros durante m\u00e1s de 1.000 a\u00f1os. De nada sirve exigir cambios radicales en las pol\u00edticas de uso del suelo a causa del \u00e9bola cuando tales cambios podr\u00edan tener impactos graves y mucho m\u00e1s amplios sobre otros factores sociales, ambientales o econ\u00f3micos.<\/p>\n<p>Por ejemplo, es probable que los medios de subsistencia y las oportunidades de nutrici\u00f3n provistos por la carne de monte a decenas de millones de personas no sean condenados inmediatamente. M\u00e1s bien, es posible, que la realizaci\u00f3n de inversiones pol\u00edticas y financieras en atenci\u00f3n b\u00e1sica de la salud, en educaci\u00f3n y concientizaci\u00f3n y en normas de seguridad alimentaria sean medidas m\u00e1s eficientes. En otras palabras, la gesti\u00f3n de los riesgos en salud, y tambi\u00e9n las oportunidades de salud, deben ser consideradas como uno de varios objetivos para la forester\u00eda y los paisajes.<\/p>\n<p>No debemos aislar la foresteria de ning\u00fan objetivo de desarrollo, algo que se\u00f1al\u00e9 anteriormente, al mostrar c\u00f3mo esta ciencia se relaciona con cada uno de los temas considerados por los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS).<\/p>\n<p>El <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forestsnews.org\/21550\/publican-documento-sobre-areas-de-accion-de-los-ods-grandes-oportunidades-para-la-gestion-forestal\">ejemplo <\/a>que us\u00e9 en ese momento para mostrar el v\u00ednculo entre la forester\u00eda y la salud fue uno positivo \u2014los beneficios del \u00e1rbol Prunus africana en el tratamiento de des\u00f3rdenes de pr\u00f3stata\u2014.<br \/>\nAhora podemos a\u00f1adir a la ecuaci\u00f3n los riesgos de brotes de \u00e9bola, al tiempo que reconocemos que el v\u00ednculo de la forester\u00eda con la salud es fuerte, como inform\u00f3 CIFOR en 2006 en \u201c<a href=\"\/\/www.cifor.org\/publications\/pdf_files\/infobrief\/011-Infobrief.pdf?_ga=1.182577510.130315623.1409802571\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Los bosques y la salud humana<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>La planificaci\u00f3n de investigaciones a largo plazo no es \u00fatil para las v\u00edctimas del reciente brote de \u00e9bola, y tal vez no ayude a calmar la direcci\u00f3n del debate actual sobre el \u00e9bola y la forester\u00eda. Sin embargo, en el largo plazo debemos abordar seriamente el complejo manejo m\u00faltiple de los bosques y paisajes.
