Sin embargo, los animales s\u00ed se reproducen y bajo ciertas condiciones se pueden cazar sin exterminarlos. \u00c9sas son buenas noticias para \u00c1frica, donde la carne de monte es una de las fuentes m\u00e1s importantes de prote\u00edna.<\/p>\n<p>En gran parte de \u00c1frica occidental los cazadores acabaron con las especies m\u00e1s vulnerables hace a\u00f1os. La mayor\u00eda de los animales restantes se reproducen r\u00e1pido y se adaptan bien a los barbechos, \u00e1reas agr\u00edcolas y peque\u00f1os fragmentos de bosque. Los cazadores pueden capturar muchos de estos animales sin causar mucho da\u00f1o.<\/p>\n<p>Un art\u00edculo de Guy Cowlishaw, Samantha Mendelson, y J. Marcus Rowcliffe, de la Sociedad Zool\u00f3gica de Londres, titulado Evidencia de sostenibilidad de la carne de monte post agotamiento en un mercado maduro, demuestra que el consumo de la carne de monte en partes de \u00c1frica Occidental probablemente es sostenible. Los autores utilizaron como ejemplo a Takoradi, la tercera ciudad m\u00e1s grande de Ghana. Encuestaron a cazadores y comerciantes y obtuvieron datos sobre ventas de varios miles de animales cazados por su carne para conocer cu\u00e1ntos animales fueron capturados y en d\u00f3nde, cu\u00e1ntos fueron vendidos, y a qu\u00e9 precio. El estudio se centr\u00f3 sobre todo en diez mam\u00edferos que conformaban el 84% de la carne vendida, la mayor\u00eda de los cuales eran ant\u00edlopes peque\u00f1os y roedores.<\/p>\n<p>Aunque los cazadores locales capturan m\u00e1s de un mill\u00f3n de kilos de estos diez mam\u00edferos cada a\u00f1o no parece que est\u00e9n agot\u00e1ndolos. En los diez casos los cazadores capturaron menos animales que los que la teor\u00eda indica que ser\u00eda sostenible. Los precios de la carne de monte (ajustados por la<\/p>\n<p>inflaci\u00f3n) son mucho m\u00e1s bajos que hace 37 a\u00f1os, lo cual sugiere que las especie implicadas no est\u00e1n escaseando. Tampoco los animales cazados cerca de la ciudad son m\u00e1s peque\u00f1os que los que se capturan m\u00e1s lejos, como ocurre t\u00edpicamente con situaciones de sobre-caza.<\/p>\n<p>La caza parece haber causado el peor da\u00f1o hace alg\u00fan tiempo. Los autores no encontraron ning\u00fan ejemplar de algunas especies de monos, cerdos y ant\u00edlopes que se reproducen de forma lenta en los mercados, lo cual implica que est\u00e1n escaseando o han desaparecido por completo de los bosques. Los cazadores encuestados piensan que las poblaciones de animales se redujeron en el pasado, pero ese descenso se ha nivelado en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n<p>Cowlishaw y sus colegas concluyen que no es necesario preocuparse mucho por la caza comercial en \u00e1reas donde ha existido por muchos a\u00f1os. Los problemas m\u00e1s grandes se presentan cuando las actividades madereras o los caminos nuevos abren nuevas \u00e1reas de bosque para la caza y en regiones donde se establecen asentamientos por primera vez.
