Despu\u00e9s de explorar la literatura sobre cient\u00edficos que hacen inventarios de \u00e1rboles, los invit\u00f3 a participar en su estudio.<\/p>\n<p>Dijo que \u201cla mayor\u00eda de los cient\u00edficos reaccionaron positivamente\u2026 Entendieron la ventaja de formar parte de un proyecto a mayor escala\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>El estudio, publicado recientemente en <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/geb.12092\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Global Ecology and Biogeography<\/a>, incluy\u00f3 finalmente a 60 cient\u00edficos. Ellos examinaron los datos de 192,308 \u00e1rboles de por lo menos 10 cm de di\u00e1metro en 120 zonas forestales en tierras bajas h\u00famedas, de edad madura, en Am\u00e9rica del Sur, \u00c1frica y Asia. Definieron como \u00e1rboles grandes aquellos que med\u00edan por lo menos 70 cm (28 pulgadas) de di\u00e1metro a la altura del pecho (dap).<\/p>\n<p>Entre sus resultados, los investigadores determinaron que los \u00e1rboles m\u00e1s grandes desempe\u00f1an un papel m\u00e1s importante en el almacenamiento de la biomasa que lo que antes se pensaba. \u201cSolo tres por ciento de los bosques est\u00e1n formados por \u00e1rboles grandes, pero estos \u00e1rboles almacenan hasta la mitad de la biomasa\u201d, dijo Silk. \u201cSi solamente unos cuantos de estos \u00e1rboles grandes mueren, esto produce inmediatamente un impacto mayor\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Igualmente concluyeron que las variables clim\u00e1ticas afectan la densidad de los \u00e1rboles grandes y la biomasa encima del terreno, lo que significa que el cambio clim\u00e1tico afectar\u00e1 el almacenamiento de biomasa de bosques tropicales. \u201cSi las temperaturas contin\u00faan elev\u00e1ndose \u2013 se predice un aumento de 2 a 6 grados (Celsius) durante el pr\u00f3ximo siglo \u2013 probablemente afectar\u00e1n negativamente a estos \u00e1rboles grandes\u201d, dijo Slik.<\/p>\n<p>Los resultados tienen repercusiones en varias \u00e1reas. \u201cAhora sabemos que estos \u00e1rboles grandes son importantes para la biomasa\u201d, dijo Slik, \u201cpero todav\u00eda no conocemos mucho acerca de la din\u00e1mica de estos \u00e1rboles \u2013 la velocidad de su crecimiento, la edad que alcanzan \u2013 porque los investigadores se han estado concentrando en parcelas relativamente peque\u00f1as que contienen pocos \u00e1rboles grandes debido a su baja densidad\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Con los avances en t\u00e9cnicas de percepci\u00f3n remota, dijo, es relativamente f\u00e1cil reconocer estos \u00e1rboles grandes y hacer estimados precisos de la biomasa. Los investigadores deber\u00edan empezar a enfocarse m\u00e1s en los \u00e1rboles grandes en parcelas m\u00e1s grandes.<\/p>\n<p>Desde la publicaci\u00f3n del trabajo, Slik y sus colegas han identificado  tres mil parcelas m\u00e1s que abarcan 800 mil \u00e1rboles y 20 mil especies. Dijo que habr\u00e1 m\u00e1s trabajos de investigaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>La importancia de estos \u00e1rboles grandes deber\u00eda ser tambi\u00e9n una llamada de atenci\u00f3n para la industria forestal. \u201cLa extracci\u00f3n de madera generalmente se concentra en los \u00e1rboles m\u00e1s grandes\u201d. \u201cTal vez sea mejor enfocarnos en \u00e1rboles de tama\u00f1o intermedio.
