Pero en la b\u00fasqueda de este objetivo, la agricultura se ha expandido en las tierras forestales, creando una serie de problemas ambientales: m\u00e1s del <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalchange.umich.edu\/globalchange2\/current\/lectures\/deforest\/deforest.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">50 por ciento <\/a>de los bosques de la tierra han desaparecido, y <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/news\/story\/pt\/item\/40893\/icode\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">en la \u00faltima d\u00e9cada <\/a>se ha perdido anualmente un \u00e1rea de bosques similar al tama\u00f1o del estado de Luisiana. Al mismo tiempo, la mitad de los alimentos producidos en el mundo se desperdicia.<\/p>\n<p>Ahora enfrentamos un dilema: \u00bfc\u00f3mo se puede proporcionar alimentos nutritivos y asequibles a los 9.6 mil millones de personas que vivir\u00e1n en la tierra en el 2050 sin acelerar la deforestaci\u00f3n y el cambio clim\u00e1tico, sin destruir la biodiversidad, sin afectar los medios de vida rurales y sin alterar los recursos h\u00eddricos? \u00bfDe qu\u00e9 manera pueden la agricultura y la gesti\u00f3n forestal contribuir positivamente al progreso social, econ\u00f3mico y ambiental?<\/p>\n<p>Esta es una ecuaci\u00f3n dif\u00edcil de resolver, pero hay razones para ser cautelosamente optimistas. En las \u00faltimas d\u00e9cadas se ha logrado 90 por ciento de aumento en la producci\u00f3n de alimentos en <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifpri.org\/gfpr\/2012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">tierras agr\u00edcolas existentes. <\/a> El aumento gradual de las inversiones en el uso sostenible de la tierra puede mejorar a\u00fan m\u00e1s la productividad. La deforestaci\u00f3n a nivel mundial se est\u00e1 desacelerando en cierta medida y los bosques se est\u00e1n expandiendo en las regiones cuyas econom\u00edas no son muy dependientes de la agricultura. Hasta el momento, hemos conseguido de la tierra no solamente suficientes alimentos para todos, sino tambi\u00e9n productos maderables y no maderables. Y con un <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/forestry\/food-security\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">creciente reconocimiento <\/a> de la importancia de los bosques para los servicios del ecosistema, los ingresos y la nutrici\u00f3n, podemos esperar que la gesti\u00f3n de los recursos naturales logre una contribuci\u00f3n m\u00e1s amplia al desarrollo sostenible.<\/p>\n<p>Pero primero necesitamos entender exactamente el desaf\u00edo que plantea la seguridad alimentaria. No tendremos \u00e9xito si persistimos en definirla simplemente como una necesidad de producir m\u00e1s calor\u00edas. Los 870 millones de personas que no cuentan con suficientes alimentos tienen hambre principalmente <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/management\/pdf\/HLP_P2015_Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">porque son pobres<\/a>\u2014no porque haya escasez de alimentos en el mercado. Producir simplemente m\u00e1s ma\u00edz o trigo ser\u00e1 finalmente de poca ayuda para estas personas.<\/p>\n<p>El enfoque en la producci\u00f3n de m\u00e1s calor\u00edas poco ha contribuido para enfrentar \u201cel hambre oculta\u201d, donde <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/publications\/sofi\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">dos mil millones de personas en el mundo presentan deficiencia de micronutrientes. <\/a> En Indonesia, pa\u00eds miembro del G20, m\u00e1s de un tercio de todos los ni\u00f1os tienen retraso en su desarrollo f\u00edsico, debido mayormente a la <a href=\"http:\/\/www.micronutrient.org\/english\/view.asp?x=604\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">falta de nutrientes importantes <\/a>en su alimentaci\u00f3n: prote\u00ednas, vitaminas y minerales como el hierro. Los subsidios agr\u00edcolas en pa\u00edses como los Estados Unidos socavan la agricultura local de las econom\u00edas emergentes y en desarrollo. M\u00e1s aun, se consume alimentos de primera necesidad m\u00e1s baratos a costa de una dieta m\u00e1s variada, que incluye alimentos provenientes de los bosques.<\/p>\n<p>Si nuestro objetivo es una mejor nutrici\u00f3n y no solamente m\u00e1s alimentos, la importancia de los bosques entra en juego. Los bosques han proporcionado alimentos a los seres humanos durante milenios. Los alimentos forestales \u2013 desde frutos, vegetales y hierbas hasta insectos y carne de animales silvestres \u2013 son todav\u00eda fuentes vitales de nutrici\u00f3n para cientos de millones de personas, muchas de las cuales se encuentran entre las m\u00e1s pobres del mundo. En la Cuenca del Congo se consume anualmente <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forestsnews.org\/11461\/bushmeat-stories-voices-from-the-congo-basin\">seis millones de toneladas de carne de animales silvestres <\/a> \u2013 casi la misma cantidad que la carne exportada desde Brasil. En las \u00e1reas rurales de Africa Subsahariana, la alimentaci\u00f3n de los ni\u00f1os es m\u00e1s diversa \u2013 y la diversidad es un indicador ampliamente aceptado para una buena nutrici\u00f3n \u2013 con un <a href=\"\/\/www.cifor.org\/publications\/pdf_files\/articles\/ACIFOR1109.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">aumento en la cobertura forestal. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Los bosques tambi\u00e9n apoyan la seguridad alimentaria en forma indirecta, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegef.org\/gef\/press_release\/2011_IYF_forest_for_water\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">manteniendo los recursos h\u00eddricos, brindando energ\u00eda a partir de la madera y ofreciendo un h\u00e1bitat <\/a> para los polinizadores silvestres y los predadores de plagas agr\u00edcolas. Los bosques y los \u00e1rboles refuerzan la capacidad de resistencia de los sistemas de producci\u00f3n de alimentos frente al cambio clim\u00e1tico y a la inestabilidad econ\u00f3mica, social y pol\u00edtica: los estudios han demostrado que las poblaciones rurales en \u00e1reas boscosas recurren con frecuencia al bosque para su sustento, cuando la temporada de cultivo \u2013 o la situaci\u00f3n pol\u00edtica local \u2013 empiezan a ir mal. La investigaci\u00f3n conducida por mi organizaci\u00f3n y otros autores ha encontrado que <a href=\"\/\/www.cifor.org\/mediamultimedia\/key-facts-on-the-importance-of-forest\/forests-food-and-livelihoods.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">1.4 mil millones de personas generan en promedio 20 por ciento de sus ingresos a partir de los bosques &#8211; <\/a>una red de seguridad cr\u00edtica, especialmente cuando se pierden las cosechas.<\/p>\n<p>Sin duda, se necesita una nueva direcci\u00f3n para la pol\u00edtica que afecta los bosques y la seguridad alimentaria. Los investigadores, los encargados de formular pol\u00edticas y todos aquellos involucrados, deben ver a los bosques y a la agricultura como inextricablemente vinculados \u2013 como las partes de un \u201cpaisaje\u201d mayor que abarca no solamente la relaci\u00f3n din\u00e1mica entre los bosques y las granjas, sino tambi\u00e9n los factores socioecon\u00f3micos, culturales, pol\u00edticos y de g\u00e9nero que lo caracterizan. Los bosques son cuernos de la abundancia en t\u00e9rminos econ\u00f3micos y nutricionales, para un cuarto de la poblaci\u00f3n mundial, y apuntalan el suministro mundial de alimentos para el resto de nosotros. Un planteamiento paisaj\u00edstico elimina los l\u00edmites sectoriales que confinan nuestro an\u00e1lisis y limitan nuestras soluciones.<\/p>\n<p>El planteamiento paisaj\u00edstico puede ser algo natural en las comunidades rurales, donde los l\u00edmites sectoriales son menos notorios y los medios de vida se benefician frecuentemente de una variedad de actividades y donde por ejemplo, las sinergias entre \u00e1rboles y agricultura pueden ser evidentes.<\/p>\n<p>Un mayor desaf\u00edo ser\u00e1 convencer a las instituciones tradicionales en los sectores de agricultura, conservaci\u00f3n y silvicultura, para que busquen soluciones m\u00e1s efectivas y combinadas que satisfagan objetivos m\u00faltiples. No ayuda que procesos intergubernamentales, como la Convenci\u00f3n sobre Cambio Clim\u00e1tico, trabajen dentro de l\u00edmites sectoriales establecidos. El principal obst\u00e1culo podr\u00edan ser las barreras institucionales que dividen los bosques y los campos.
